About me¶
Hi! I am John Story. I’m a lecturer at Bangor University who also runs the Pontio Fablab. Aiming to start an Academy node in the future.
Why Fab Academy?¶
A few reasons
Sticky fablab¶
I’d like to explore how to better activate our space. We have more than the basic toolset but we need to better embody and transmit the fab meme.
I’ve helped run our FabLAB here in North Wales for a few years now. We’ve seen close to 800 people come through our doors. On average about 40% go on to do some machine inductions. But only a handful every year stick around to work on more that one project.
How do we make the FabLAB more sticky?
Improve my courses¶
I’m currently teaching a couple of courses to undergraduates. Better understanding of fab directly improves my delivery.
Localising FabLAB, an Agri specialist centre.¶
A lot of our projects as a centre are starting to form around food. Building out from Fab Academy towards a Agricademy is on the cards.
My background¶
Graduate of Electronic engineering some time ago. Spent some years in industry writing software. Came back to into the academic domain to run some industry focused projects, including establishing a Fablab.
Love making the first one of anything. Notable examples where we’ve helped with a first prototype for Studio Banana:
Something I’d like to do a lot more¶
Last year I built a Uke on a course with a fantastic artisan builder…
