Week 5_ 3D SCANNING AND PRINTING

During the Coronivirus emergency I helped the maker community of Milan printing valves for Decathlon masks.

3D printing

During the coronavirus emergency, the contribution pf the maker community has been very important to optimize the work of medicians and nurses.

Step by step:

  1. I partecipated to the maker support with my Prusa MDK3 i3.
  2. 3D printed Coronavirus

  3. And helped printing the valves, arriving to a printing standard of 8 valves a day.
Optimizing the print was key this time: the result had to be both very safe, resistant, and the supports had to be easy to remove not to break any piece, and making us lose precious time.

  5. I printed out approximately 50 valves in 2 weeks, using few more than an entire 1kg bobine of PLA.

3D printing with resin

I want to try a different printing technique. In OpenDot there is a Form 1+ resin 3D printer.

  1. Considering all the variety of formal solutions, I decided to look for a solution that could be done only with 3D printing.
The concentric shapes are an example, since only this kind of CAD technologies can intervent on the inside of a shape.
  2. I got inspired from the lucky charm of Mulan: the cricket in the cage.
In this course we faced the programming and debugging week, so I thought to create a lucky charm bug for programmers.

  3. I created the 3D of a key-ring as lucky charm solution.
  4. Rhino file

  5. And put it on the PreForm 3D printing softwere.

Thingiverse opensource project sharing

Then I added the project to Thingiverse to spread the object.

3D scanning

The new Fab Academy student Filippo suggested me a photogrammerty app for 3D scanning objects from the smartphone.
The object you want to scan has to be put on a trigger printed on a paper and the result is not precise, but generally realistic.

So I decided to scan my candy box.
