Invention,
Intellectual Property and Business Models
Develop a
plan for dissemination of your final project.
Prepare
drafts of your summary slide and video clip and put them in your root
directory.
The
project at this stage will be for exclusive use within the University premises
(in fact, it is intended to be used solely for the Architecture Building. Once
all emerging issues are solved, including adding future features, there could
be a plan to start producing it for different areas of the university and
finally, produce it to commercial use.
This
will not be in a short time, because every project made within the Fablab is,
by current rules, intellectual property of the university and there is not a
clear path to overcome this to achieve commercial production. This is something
that should be solved by the time the final product is ready.

The
first development to be considered for implementation is the automated
mechanism which, ideally, will be able to send a signal to an external motor
and open or close a window at will. The prototype design is considering a
pinion and rack mechanism to transform the circular movement output coming from
the motor into a linear movement.
I
have been making some tests with acrylic laser-cut and a step-motor with mixed
results. For instance, the rack-and-pinion solution seems to be working just
fine. There are some modifications that may be done from to the design such as
rounding the rack dents to ease the system movement.
In
the step motor area, the system does not have the torque needed to move a
full-size window. There are a few solutions that will be tried and eventually
implemented, such as using a gear head to let the motor to spin faster and
produce more torque to be used.
