3. Computer Aided design

This week is challenging to me because I am going to draw my second version of my robot. I don’t know how to start, how do I want my robot looks like. Looks are so important. For me to 3d model something that is already exist and add some modifications on it to make it looks different is a piece of cake. But to 3d model a robot from scratch? This is so wide and many options to be decided, I have so many ideas and I don’t know which one I should pick however it’s time to take the first step and put things together to draw the initial version of my human robot!

2D Raster: GIMP

As a start , I am going to try out by using GIMP which is a raster based drawing software. And this my second version skitch

2D Vector : inkscape

I tried to use inkscape as well, at first I drew a rectangle:

and then I Drew a circular shape like the following to use it as the body of the human robot

and then I changed the opacity for both shapes to 100%

then I drew a stright line by using the beizer curves on the cicular shape and removed the extra parts by using drawing a white rectangle

and then I drew straight vertical lines for the neck:

after that I draw a box and then dragged it from one of its points that it had in order to change the shape to this which I used it as an arm and then I copied the shape and flipped it horizontally

after that I changed the fill and stroke properties for both hands to be filled with the color white so the lines of the body will not be shown:

3D Modeling : Solidworks

After this, I have tried to 3d model the robot by using solidworks: At first I Have sketched on the front panel:

Then I have sketched a circle and extrude it to be the neck of the robot

Then I have sketched the following to model the head

Then I have used the fillet feature to remove sharp edges and make it look nicer:

I have also sketched two circles and extrude cut them to be the eyes

After this I have sketched the joint placements for the arms. As I am thinking to have rose joints to connect the arms so I have done the following: As the thickness for the body is only 10mm I have revolved a circle to have some thinkess so I can curve it for the rose joint

Then I have used the mirror feature to do the same thing for the other arm

After this I have used the cut revolve again to remove the extra parts that I don’t need

After this I have used again the cut revolve to curve the joint placemnet and I used mirror feauture to do the same for the other side.

In a new part I have sketched the arm, I am not satisfied with the arm but for now it will be like this until I find an insperation about how it should looks like

After this on the assembly I have used concentric mate to connect the arms

Design Methodology

I have made the height of the robot as 970mm because I want it to look as a human. For the body and head I have made it hollow inside so I can insert the electronics parts as you can notice I have made the thickness for the head 35mm and the body 10mm and the reason behind this is to give a strength for the body to protect the electronics elements inside. I am still thinking about the material I will be using but currently I am more likely to fabricate the structure with fiber glass Or PLA. However, this is just a draft 1 dimensions and shape may change based on the material and the electronics parts. the holes which reperesent the eyes of the robot will be the locations for cameras
For the base I will be using an omni wheels that I saw on alibaba.com website
