Rachel Legerski - Fab Academy 2015

Invention, Intellectual Property, and Income

Week 17 Assignment

Our homework was to develop a plan for dissemination of my final project.

Ready, Fire, Aim

  • Since I'm a teacher, and I will be teaching art and design beginning in August, my project has to do with art. I decided to fabricate a picture frame that incorporates the use of the laser cutter, vinyl cutter and electronics. Art work created by the student will serve as the background for the final project. So I am READY! Aiming and firing? Well, I wasn't thinking about a marketing aspect for my project so, I am going to suppose here...We have a yearly auction to help raise funds for our programs. This is definitely a limited market.

  • Copyright

  • After discussing this with my "partner in crime", Gail, we decided that the route to go per Neil's advice..."Copyrights are for creative works, are easy to get, and have personal value".
  • We will use the MIT permission model:
    # Neil Gershenfeld # 11/11/10 # # (c) Massachusetts Institute of Technology 2010 # Permission granted for experimental and personal use; # license for commercial sale available from MIT.
    (c) Rachel L. Legerski 2015 Permission granted for experimental and personal use. License for commercial sale available from Rachel L. Legerski

  • Patent vs. Impact

  • My intention for my final project is to impact my students and the community of Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools. I want to share what I've learned to make with my students at The School of Innovation, initially. I plan on sharing this project with the other art teachers in our schools. I can see this as a planned outreach to share our resources and introduce personal fabrication to as many students as possible within our district. Possibly in the future, reaching beyond our district into other surrounding districts. to make cool things, too.
