Our homework was to design a 3D mold, machine it, and cast parts from it. I designed a gear, which is part of our logo for the new School of Innovation where I will teach in the fall. Ultimately, I will cast chocolate bars to be given to students, parents, and visitors who come to SOI.
Challenges
I used Fab Modules and the Modela, but had issues with the cutting. I was using a 1/8 in. flat end mill with an output speed of 20 mm/sec (see photos as well). I ended up milling another mold on the ShopBot later on because I wasn't happy with the quality of my first one.
Mixing the food safe silicon was difficult and time consuming, much more so than if I had used eurethane rubber.
Solid Works is still very challenging for me, but Karen
at LCCC was willing to work with me. Thanks, Karen !
