Week 17. Invention, Intellectual Property, and Income

Licences

When doing my first week's assignment in which we had to build a webpage, I chose a license for the work on my Fab Academy page. I've started using a Creative Commons License. It's visible in the footer of all pages of my documentation, have a look. It is free to use, share and adapt, as long as my work is acknowledged by attribution. This will also be used for my final project.

this week's assignment:

develop a plan for dissemination of your final project

Further development

I would like to develop my project further. The final project is not an entirely finished product. I would like to improve the way the modules are connected and placed on clothes.

Ideally, this would be done by buttons. These press buttons can at the same time act a wire to supply power and for the communication, and connect the modules to the clothes.

However, safety is an important issue with electricity and wearables. So I would have to figure out how to keep all current within safe limits and how to isolate everything.

Also the durability could be improved. The copper traces come of the polypropylene quite easily. This might be due to the age of the copper foil, it's been in the Lab for quite a while so maybe the glue isn't strong enough anymore. Otherwise other material should be used, polypropylene is known for the property that it is hard to stick something to it.

If these next steps would be taken, I could try to commercially spread my final project.

Commercial development

Commercial development of my final project could be done in several ways, on the one hand selling finished products, on the other hand giving workshops.

If my final project would be developed a bit further, I think I could sell the product to several kinds of people. For example: festival visitors who want a flashy outfit, theater directors, costume makers or dancers who want the performer to interact with the colors in the environment. Also, I could try to make another product, based on the same principles, for example safety lights for runners.

Hosting workshops would also be a good way for commercial spread of my final project. I could give workshops in how to make the various aspects of the final project. One workshop could cover making the electronics for and another for designing and making the origami shapes.
