Computer-Controlled Machining

Assignment

Make something big

This is one of my favorite forms, the ability to control a machine to create what you want is incredibly fascinating! I waits this form to put to use the skills acquired during the Fabacademy to produce some things that make it nice the place where I work.
I decided to do something useful for me for the assignment of this week Four years ago I founded a coworking, in the same building where 2 years ago I opened the Fablab SPQwoRk. I did many restorations and fornitures by my self, I love find solutions to have spaces of sharing where the people can create connection.

Step 1:Brainstorming

Among the many works that I like to do, I prefer woodworking, I made several libraries of wood, rooms with loft, stairs etc etc. I saw SPQwoRk, and I noticed there are any seating outside, so I decided to make two benches, to decorate the outdoor area. The first draft in pencil, allowed me to understand the size and the degree of inclination of the back, but above all I realized how many pieces were composed my bench.

Step 2: Design

I used Solidworks for the design, I find this software very powerful, despite not having graphic design experience, in a few hours I produced the individual pieces that make my bench. I chose to work with wood OSB 23mm thick, so I adapted thickness and joints to my needs. I finally exported in DXF file which I then optimized with Vectric.

Step 3: Make it!

For the realization of the benches, I used one and a half sheet of OSB from 2500mm x 12500mm, thickness 23mm, the cost of each table is €25.65 (vat inclux), in total I spent more than less €40. The machine used for milling is a Machmate with working area 2600mm x 1700mm.
