Exercise 03

During the third week of the FabAcademy our focues is on Computer-Controlled Cutting and our exercise is design, make and document a press-fit construction kit

Friday Lab

During Friday lab session we discussed and analized some software tips and design tecniques for lasercutting. We also installed and tried the Roland GX-24 on ubuntu with the FabModules. We also made it work with an inkscape extension: Inkcut. The process to install an run it wasn't smooth. I didn't find the time to dig in it and try to replicate the issue.

Saturday Experiments

On Saturday together with Massimo Bianchini we designed and cut some sample to test tolerances of the process.

Press Fit contruction

On March 28th WeMake will host one of the many Arduino Day happening around the world. We're praparing a resident project for that day: an indoor vegetable garden. One of the elements will be some shelves with hydroponics vases.

Following this sketch I used SketchUp to design e refine the idea. It's a very fast tool to do this kind of process.

After that I designed each modular component using FreeCAD. I decided to spend time on it during the FabAcademy because I think that it's a powerful tool, particularly the parametric capabilities that are perfect for the lasercutting. The shelves will be probably built using 10mm plywood but because of the parametric design I could prototype with 4 mm cardboard.
