FabAcademy 2015

Week 17 - Invention, intellectual property and income:

Disseminating your project

Assignment: Develop a plan for dissemination of your final project

Disseminating a lazy old tired bumblebee? Why not!

I think Franz would be more of an arts/design project than an actual product in that sense. But of course arts projects are also part of an economy. In that sense, worrying about patents (especially the useful part of "novel/non-obvious/useful/possible" is undetermined here) and such seems a bit over the top, but copyright is something to think about.

Choosing a licence

I'd already specified a creative commons licence for all my fabacademy work (see bottom of page): i chose the Attribution- NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International Licence because I think attribution is the least you can ask for if you put a lot of work, thinking and effort into a project. The non-commercial and sharealike aspects are because I think it is a potentially marketable product, so it would be good to protect that option somewhat.

The by-nc-sa licence explained

Taking the project further

In order to take this project further I would probably spend some more time optimizing the design as the first prototype could be more efficient in terms of materials and design choices. I could put the lessons learned during the making of the prototype to good use. This would not take so much time and it would be perfectly fine to do on my own account. The cost of manufacturing it would also be lower. A lot of the design files would have to be improved, but I suppose this gives the edge. The current state of the project is that it's open and available, but any improved versions could be used in other ways.

Income

As for income, I don't have huge plans to manufacture this project or produce it at a large scale, but I would like to be able to reproduce it efficiently and potentially sell it to order for a reasonable price if people are interested in it. If I wanted to really make money with it I could put it on my portfolio or perhaps start an Etsy shop or similar. I think that would be a suitable platform for such a project.

Another option could be to sell DIY kits with the electronics pre-made and assembled. And to sell those with the design files so people can create their own kits with materials of their choosing.

Open-sourcing an improved version

That said, if it turns out there's interest in it: I would consider disseminating the full process and improved designs as an instructable for people to make on of their own. I don't think this fights with making more bugs to order because there's still a lot of people who are willing to pay for you to make things even if they could make it themselves.
