Week 5

3D Printing

Software: Fusion 360
Machine: Makerbot Replicator 2, PLA filament

For this week's assignment (design and print a 3D object that could not be made subtractively) I made a bolt and nut. I used Fusion 360 for making the 3D data. I have just recently started to use this software and (I’ve heard that) there are a lot of features. An account is necessary for using this software and your projects are uploaded to the cloud (A360). The tread of the bolt was made with coil. I went through the process of printing the 3D data and making adjustments to the data several times. At first I started to create individual coils for the bolt and nut, but it was difficult to make them in just the right size so that they fit together. So I created the bolt first, and then made the nut by copying the screw, scaling it to 1.3 in the x and z axis, and cutting it from the polygon cylinder. After several minor mistakes and a little adjusting I was able to fasten the nut on the bolt. (It's not so smug though. Might need a little more adjustment.) The 3D data can be viewed and download here.

3D Scanning

I used 123D Catch on my phone to scan an origami dragon by placing it on a lazy suzan and taking about 50 pictures from different angles. The 3D data can be viewed and download here
