Dear Soldering
This weeks focus was on building a curcuit board. I followed these instructions from the Fab Academy page. When I started I had close to 0 experience and when I was done I had redone my soldering a few times simply to learn how to do it well, and it worked.
Tips and trix
The best tip I got for how to get the soldering good and shiny was to use a lower heat (I had mine on 310) while using the side of the iron instead of using the tip of it.
Another good tip was to slowly turn the pen, rotating off the metal onto the board using the units as a wall. When doing this one could also point the wire into the blob to let it slowly grow pulling away when its got enough solder to fully cover. This turned out to be a lot easier than simply separating when off the board since the amount was more easily controlled.
..and the issues
Throughout the whole processes there were a few smaller issues such as not tightening enough around the drill on the milling machine which resulted in it dropping. Luckily the tip didn't break off since it landed in a hole right underneath the starting position.
The biggest issue I stumbled upon ended up being quite time consuming and could easily have been avoided if I'd checked for it earlier. What happened was that the image size on the outlines for the milling machine had changed from the last time I had used the same image (outside intereferance) and was now a few millimeters too small and thus cut off one of the lines, destroying the board.
The problem was that I didn't notice it until I had already soldered on all the pieces. I've learned from my mistakes and now know to check the board properly to make sure all the lines join. I could also have used a copper wire and seperately attached it afterwards but this I thought of too late.
The programming
I followed the tutorial and plugged my board together with Annas board to program it. I was about to program it again since I'd forgotten that I'd done it in the first hand but found that it had already been programed by cheking here. Other than that I must say, if I'd ever go trans I'd do quite well with an ISP rainbow mustach.
