Computer-Controlled Cutting

This week the exercise was about design, make, and document a press-fit construction kit. My idea is to attain the installation's seamless aesthetic quality. and create a prarametric design which can be applied to all the different scales and different form. Here is the link to see the details.

The exercise was to create a prototype by using Laser-cutting machine and the material we have been given is 3 mm cardboard and as i said i am trying to generate the computational design and then digital fabrication. For that i am using GRASSHOPPER plug-in with RHINO as 3D modelling software. as you can see in the image, it shows diffrent stage of the application of GRASSHOPPER definition and how its trasnform anyform to the design i have made.

The final result was generated by operating with codes capable of repeating sequences of information that leave emerge, from time to time, different and (in potential) infinite patterns.

By dividing the complex surface into triangles and planarise the panels obtained, in order to make them printable, in straight line, by a Laser-cutter and building a prototype. I have made the whole definition to make a huge pavilion which you can see in the image. But to make a test, i have decided to create a small prototype of a double curvature from. Once i had the all the pieces ready i have used EPILOG lasercutter machine with following parameters: POWER-80 and SPEED-25. It took around 20 minutes to cut all the pieces. As being an architect and working with Fablab Barcelona since a year, i know how to use all these machines so there was nothing went wrong.
