Applications and Implications

This assignment is related to the documentation of my final project so far and it's planing.

What will it do?

Talando is a sound installation. Ideally it will presented in galleries, in digital arts and sonic arts festivals. It can also be presented as a musical as augmented musical instruments

Who's done what beforehand?

As far as I know nobody has ever tried up until now to re-contextualize the Talando by presenting it in a gallery space. Moreover it's functionality as an object will be augmented by electronics and computer music software. Of course all of its parts will be digitally fabricated.

What materials and components will be required?

1 plywood sheet 2440 x 1220 x 18mm

1 fabduino board

1 shield with mounted screw terminals

ribbon cable for the connections

2 accelerometers

2 piezoelectric sensors

heat shrink

2 1/4'' mono audio sockets

1 stereo audio cable typically found on RCA connectors

3mm acrylic sheet for laser cutting

a 10mm diameter rope

screws and nuts

Where will they come from?

All the materials can be found on the Fab Lab inventory and only a couple in www.amazon.co.uk

How much will it cost?

T

What parts and systems will be made?

a software in MAX programming language

1 fabduino for the sensor interface

wires for the sensors (piezos and accelerometers)

acrylic cup in order to mount the sockets

the wooden body of the Talando

What processes will be used?

electronic design and production

3D and 2D design in Rhinoceros

laser cutting

cnc machining

programming (Arduino and MAX)

What tasks need to be completed?

design and produce the laser cut parts

finish the MAX application

mill and stuff the shield

machine the wood

finish the electronic wires

What questions need to be answered?

what type of sound synthesis / sound design process I will have in MAX

how sensitive do I want to be in gestural interaction

will I need DI boxes for the communication between the piezo signals and the audio interface?

shall I consider Ethernet connection between the board and the computer?

What is the schedule?

2 days to finalize the 3D/2D design

1 day for wood machining

2 days for programing

1 day for the electronic production

1 day for the assembly and tests

How will it be evaluated?

do the electronics works correctly?

is the application working correctly?

is the interaction engaging?

is the wooden body of the installation well fabricated and assembled?
