How To Make (Almost) Anything

by Tiago Figueiredo

Week 1: Final Project Proposal

For my final project I would like to propose an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle/Robot.

My idea is to research about underwater invertebrates swimming practices, like jellyfishes which use jet propulsion methods, and develop a robot based on the same principle.

Inspired by the vision of the company where I currently work, AzoreanĀ® - Aquatic Technologies , I will develop a jellyfish robot with a locomotion system (based on joints) moved by shape memory alloys.

It will be a low-consumption and fuel-efficient vehicle due to its energy production system that would be powered by water, but that is not going to be covered on this project. Provided with sensors in order to record data and posteriorly read and analyze it, like temperature and salinity.

The Aurelia Aurita (also known as moon jellyfish) will be my test subject because of its translucency and its four horseshoe-shaped gonads, which give me inspiration to create an interesting and aesthetic design.

Stay tuned for updates on this project!
