Hello everyone, my name is Yabed and I'm learning how to MAKE (almost) anything

Fab Academy 2014

>> Week 16, May 14: Applications and implications

Plan and document a final project that integrates the range of units covered

What will it do?

I want to make an instant electric water heater controlled with fabduino. Compared to traditional systems. The purpose is to optimizing consumption of energy and water, and in consequence, saving money also.

Who's done what beforehand?

A number of appliance manufacturers (specially the german ones, among others) have developed reliable versions for a water heater, but these are expensive. Is my belief that it can be made with the tools and resources available at the fablab and local sources, for a fraction of the market price.

What materials and components will be required?

  • Acrylic Case for water heater
  • Fabduino (microcontroller) and shield temperature sensor
  • Control buttons and display LCD for display and control temperature.
  • Power supply
  • Power interface
  • Heating element and hidraulic circuit

Where will they come from?

Almost all components are FabLab inventory and a more components will be recycled from other electrical appliances.

How much will it cost?

It will cost about $150 Dollars

I include the preliminary list of materials

What parts and systems will be made?

The following parts will be made

  • Acrylic Case for water heater
  • Fabduino (microcontroller) and shield temperature sensor
  • Control buttons and display LCD for display and control temperature.
  • 3D printing case for LCD and control buttons
  • Power supply
  • Power interface

What processes will be used?

In first version:

    • Computer-Aided Design
    • Computer-Controlled Cutting
    • Electronics Production
    • 3D Printing
    • Electronics Design
    • Embedded Programming
    • Input Devices
    • Output Devices

What questions need to be answered?

    How resolved power interface?

    How calibrate temperature in display?

    How assembling all modules?

    what is the schedule?

    •

      how will it be evaluated?

It will be evaluated by the following:

    • At startup the system should show the water temperature
    • The system should be capable of heating the water almost immediately.
    • The system in use, should be allowed to keep the temperature stable within the range set by the user.
