Fab Academy 2013

Potential semester project

My troll on Þrettándi festival 2012
For my final project I was thinking about making an Fab Lab troll, using Fab Lab technology.

Every year 13 days after Christmas Eve there is a festival in my hometown called Þrettándi. That festival is a "goodbye" celebration to the traditional 13 Icelandic Santa guys (Jólasveinar). Alongside the Santa guys are all kind of creatures, trolls, elves and demons for example. These creatures walk around big fire to greet (or scare) people.
I am in the troll team so every year I put on my heavy, almost 4 meter high, troll and walk around the fire (see picture to left). The trolls are around 80 and are all made by hand, and are of course different. The materials people often use is mostly old stuff lying around in garages and storage rooms. The body is usually an old barrel and the head is mostly sculpt out of Styrofoam or some other foam.

My goal as a final project is to improve my troll so it has features like no other troll. I would like to use molding and casting to make ears, nose and/or mouth and than put some lights in it. Other idea is to make a motor controlled blinking eyes and talking mouth. Then I would like to program some movements and sounds to make the troll look even more realistic.

I am looking forward to learn more in the Academy so I can begin this project.

Here is a short video from Þrettándi festival in 2010:
