3D scanning and printing

For this assignment we used Kinect to make a 3D scan of us. We used Kinecttostl to make a 3D scan using Kinect. Next, an example of a scan can be seen.

After I made an scan of myself, I used MeshLab, to reduce the number of vertices of the model.

Afterwards, the model was printed using Makerbot. Initially we where supposed to use the DIMENSION SST 1200 but theres a problem with the head, and repairs are underway. And so, we used a MakerBot.

We had a lot of issues with the MakerBot. First, the printing base was not completely flat, second, we lost almost a layer. We didn't realize, but the printer at one moment was not properly feeding the thermoplastics. In addition to that, the gears where a bit rusty due to the lack of use.

In the picture, the missing layer in the base can be seen. However, that was the least of the problems, the arm looks like a huge melt and we had to force stop the printing. The first layers of the body where ok, but then the following layer where not properly placed. And so, it looks completely deformed. Even like that, it looks kind of cool, like if I was wearing a “scary movie” like mask.
