Open source laser Machine, but in the same time it is a collaboration with laser company

Study from the open source laser cutter I found the almost half of its price goes to the machine construction.

Because of its use the construction need to be from strong and laser prof (as much as possible).

Therefor the Machine design was very importent I tried to optimize the parts and by that to lower the cost of the machine, 7 different designs till I came to the last one.

actually  now when I know that I can use Scobond for the machine skin that the laser wont damage it I am working on new design to mill a Scobond sheet and build with it more parts of the machine

- The machine Electricity will be Fabricate using Fabduino

- The scobond Sheet will be mill

- The Axis "wheel" will be fabricated like the Lasersur solution

- I am trying to make coupling

Building it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4BExDdkLu4&feature=youtu.be

- – - What more – Mill the scobond boards when they arrive to cover the machine

- – - study and make a controller for the Civan's Laser

Problems – My 1/64" drill bits are destroyed so I need to find a place to mill my fabduildo, motor controllers …

Some electronic components havent arrived yet

The Z T P motors haven't arrived yet

Building the RepRap 3D printer

New Design by Sefi

5 Axis Laser Cutter – Machine Design

For Designing my Machine I used the Open Source Laser cutter project Lasersaur

This project is amazing and they have great solutions in it that I adapted,

The differences are  that i build 5 axis machine, they have only 2 axis, They use CO2 laser with is huge need to have cooler solution and optic lenses, I am going to use a prototype of a company called CIVAN witch are creating the smallest laser using diodas, their laser consume 0.01 times less anergy and it is 100 times more paresis, the laser is going throw optic fibers there for no need optical solotion

The Machine can be smaller in size than the Lasersaur project because of the differences of the laser

But the high Z axis is the interesting place, to move the whole bace I needed lots of forces for it but the machine could be sorter, at the end I decided to put the Z axis on the Bridge using the MTM solution, yes the machine will be taller but need less efforts to move in the Z axis.

If you want you can download the 3D model of the machine and give me feedback to ohadme (at) gmail (dot) com

After playing with the dc controller and a computer fan (which can move only to one direction – to it frizzed each time it moved to the other one) , I wanted to use the stepper controller but I had some problems, couldn't send to software to the controller

My Idea was to take an old radiotape and to control the Tape speed, when I open it and I thought that the motor has 4 pins I thought that it is a stepper motor, but when I tested it I became to know that it is a DC motor with controllers

therefor I hacked and plug the  controller some problems appear but at the end it worked,

the direction changes kill the tape casetes, so I made a new code but for a reason couldn't reupload the software any more

I know that you can't hear the voice changes the magnet of the speakers making the problems

Using 123D app scan of my face to 3d print it

I need to close all the holes in the mesh I got.

Than to operate the Makerbot I had some problems at the beginning do to the material place – It was lower than the machine and and the extruder couldn't take the material in it

Last year my group and I hacked the Shopbot and build a 3d multi material depositing building printer

This week we needed to make some moulds and to cast into that

I wanted to make 2 stuff 1 unsacled Fortune cookie  and clothing hook

Because I wanted to do small stuff and maybe to cast it in metal I found a jewelry's shop to buy the drill bits and the wax

modeling the Hook

milling the mold

the machine went crazy and started to destroy the model

 and agian :)

‫CNC MILLING WEEK‬ http://localhost:8888/?p=77 http://localhost:8888/?p=77#comments Wed, 29 Feb 2012 00:15:55 +0000 ‫ohadme‬ http://localhost:8888/?p=77

In this week we needed to test the Milling tool heads, Speed and the differences between materials.

And to build something BIG

1. FIrst I build a Chair and with students we made even bigger stuff

2. some material milling tests – Glass, Stone, Cement Board, Wood and Foam

- Build a chair: (The chair design was taken from portugal's fablab website http://fablabedp.edp.pt/en/node/892 and only the noches size needed to be adjust for the right sizes)

In the first test I tried to mill the Plywood in one step with 2.5 driller dimeter – that killed the driller

That I moved to 3 steps each one drille 3rd CM, with a secusses

With the students we made some Parametric design to famous chairs and with reused wood we printed it

Re used OSB – It was hard to mill it and needed 4 steps with 2.5 wood driller

I decided to try to drill/ engrave Glass and to see how deep and I go with a regular driller couse I couldn't find a diamond driller

SO in each test I changed the speed and the deepens

the driller became to be so hot that it turned to be red, for the nest drilles I add water to the process but the driller was damage

(I will add more details later)

Fab Lab IL – put the community help as its main goal, One of the first project take part in it – is a kindergarden and school for special need children.

because of their needs the outdoor garden should have a roof but the design idea was to give them sky view ass well with cheap material

The material is waved Cement Board, so how do you mill it and make the holes in it?

I tried with some tools and we found the best one.

Than I tried to mill it with different number of steps and speed, and try to make it without modeling all the wave

 9 steps

 1 step

 super fast

I also Try to mill stone. In Jerusalem 60% of the building facades must be caver with stone, for more then 100 years nothing change we have 6 different stone patterns, I was thinking how can we change the pattern and by milling change the entire facade give the stone the glamor again

For that process I need diamond driller and a water pipes, I am tying now to water the stone for a some days before drill it make it drink the water

This week was a hard one.

FabLabIL is still only on papers, So doing everything without proper machines and materials made this week complicated.

After looking on the different circuits, I wanted to build Valentin's Heun FabISP.   Buying the Material was difficult and still the main component is missing (ATTINY44A-SSU-ND, 644-1039-1-ND) it just cannot be found in a small country when it is not for a common use.

Now it was needed to mill the circuit board, I don't have a Modela machine but I do have Sherline 5410 at home .

Sherline machines Uses Linux CNC  witch is a computer controller for CNC machines Open source and free.

I knew that it is possible to generate Gcode from Raster but the software didn't let me do it.

After reading some I found the way to open a raser image in Linux CNC and to generate a tool path Gcode fro it:

the mill was not a successes do to my driller tool size I have at home.

I wanted to check more ways to mill with open source software, and I found HeeksCad witch can generate easily Gcode from lines [I know that it is not what we need but I wanted to check this stuff out]. Therefor I need to embed the png files to vector,

For that I used Adobe Illustrator open the png file in it, Live trace it, and embed it, save it as SVG or DWG file.

when I brought the files to HeeksCad something odd happen, each line was align to the 0,0,0 point and the structure destroyed, I manage to make some Gcode and I must say that easily but couldn't fix the problem [Windows ver works fine the Linux not].

Therefore I made some checking with RhinoCam to see if it will make, and it was easy to create the Gcode with it.
