The lock¶
I’ve got an Final Project idea, what if to make reprogrammable mechanical lock? Thinking about possible solutions I’ve got a glimpse of a pin-tumbler locking mechanism with rotating disks that would store pins of different size and rotate with some kind of digitally controlled mechanism.
So, the main idea is to make such a locking mechanism that would allow you to open it mechanically with physical key but which would be reprogrammable remotely with some digitally controlled programmer.
Implications¶
The resulting device if integrated into door or some storage cell or locker would then allow to open it with a regular physical key but also would render that key useless if lock admin would reprogram mechanism to accept another key.
Mechanism¶
I think it’s possible to achieve this features with a modified pin-tumbler mechanism such as: The idea is to cut the part that hold unlocking pins into disks and put additional pins around that disk. Eventually we could rotate those disks to achieve any pin combination.
Practical use¶
Thinking about practicality I tried to imagine what would be use cases of such device. So it could be implemented in some kind of lockers where something could be placed, and that something should be available to limited number of people or for a limited time or both, for a limited time and limited auditory.
