For this week I decided to create a new composite, which was unexpectedly challenging. I chose to create something new that could be used in future, so designed a semi-circle rim that could be placed over something else. Here are the steps I took to design and create my model: Took measurements in inches and designed the semicircles in inkscape, with an object stroke of black and hairline. imported my design into corel draw and laser cut it
glued all the pieces together with simple wood glue
once everything had dried (which took approx 15-20 min) I sprayed the model with mold release
I laser cut 5 semi circle outlines out of burlap on the laser cutter using the same design I had used for the cardboard. As far as the laser cutter settings, I tried out a power of 100, frequency of 10, and speed from 100 and down in increments of 5 since burlap burns very very easily.
From there I read instructions on how to use resin (it seemed like it was essentially the same process as molding and casting in terms of mixing and such). I measured out the parts in a 2:1 ratio and mixed them together for 1-2 min.
I poured the mixture into a plastic tray and dipped the burlap into it, then placed it into the mold. I repeated this for each piece then poured the remaining bit over the burlap to smooth it out.
After waiting for it to cure overnight, i had to get the burlap concoction out. This proved a bit challenging but with a chisel and mallet I was able to painstakingly break the piece loose . What I learned is that if you don't want to spend 45+ min getting burlap out of a mold, use a mat board or something that won't stick as badly. But it still worked so.
I sanded the edges down a bit since they were somewhat rough and I was finished.
