Week 4. Electronics production

This week we worked on electronics production. We start with PCB production, soldering and then.

PCB (prototyping circuit board)

  • Chemical - done by chemical process using process of masking unwanted copper layer and removing by chemical way
  • Milling - done by removing copper layer with milling machine
  • Flexible - done with fiber laser (precise in case existing fiber laser) or vinyl cut (not precise and not possible to downsize) but can be attractive for demonstration.

PCB can have from 1 to 32 layers, but in lab 1-2 layers (using double side PCBs). More complex can be sent to production (SMart Citizens board)

Idea is to try to make and test all three basic processes during this week, and prepare simple electronic.

End Mills Identification Guide

  • Flat End Mills
  • Ball End Mills

size depend on electronics planned, mostly microprocessors need smaller size mills.

Week 4 Assigment

This week asigment is split in two phase

  1. Group assignment is to characterize the design rules for your PCB production process.

  2. Individual assignment is split in two task

  3. to make an in-circuit programmer by milling and stuffing the PCB and test it
  4. to optionally try other PCB processes
