14. Invention, intellectual property and income¶
Assignment for week 13 :¶
-
This week we have an individual assignment .
-
The individual assignment is to develop a plan for dissemination of my final project and to prepare drafts of my summary slide, video clip and to put them in my root directory
The goal for this week is to build a plan for the final project and by that i mean to build a plan to commercialize my final project Laser cat in order to invest in it, and to do that i have to learn and read about licensing and how to commercialize a product .
Individual assignment :¶
For the individual assignment i have to develop a plan for dissemination of my final project and to do that i have to read and learn about licensing and commercializing a product so lets start !!
Group meeting¶
- In order to understand more about intellectual property we had a meeting with a CEO of an intellectual property company, we talked and asked him what we can do with our projects .
Intellectual Property¶
- To start i have to read and research about the intellectual property and learn more and more about commercializing a product and whats the rules to do that .
What is intellectual property ?¶
-
Intellectual property which is knows as (IP) is a category of property that includes intangible creations of the human intellect.
-
There are many types of intellectual property, and some countries recognize more than others, the most well-known types are copyrights, patents, trademarks, and trade secrets.
What is the main purpose of (IP) ?¶
-
The main purpose of intellectual property law is to encourage the creation of a wide variety of intellectual goods.
-
To achieve this, the law gives people and businesses property rights to the information and intellectual goods they create, usually for a limited period of time, this gives economic incentive for their creation, because it allows people to profit from the information and intellectual goods they create.
-
These economic incentives are expected to stimulate innovation and contribute to the technological progress of countries, which depends on the extent of protection granted to innovators.
Intellectual property difficulties :¶
-
The intangible nature of intellectual property presents difficulties when compared with traditional property like land or goods. Unlike traditional property, intellectual property is “indivisible”, since an unlimited number of people can “consume” an intellectual good without it being depleted.
-
Additionally, investments in intellectual goods suffer from problems of appropriation: a landowner can surround their land with a robust fence and hire armed guards to protect it, but a producer of information or literature can usually do very little to stop their first buyer from replicating it and selling it at a lower price.
-
Balancing rights so that they are strong enough to encourage the creation of intellectual goods but not so strong that they prevent the goods’ wide use is the primary focus of modern intellectual property law.
Creative Commons ¶
- Now after i have read about the intellectual property its time to know about Creative Commons license
What is Creative Commons ?¶
-
A Creative Commons which is known as (CC) license is one of several public copyright licenses that enable the free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted “work”.
-
A CC license is used when an author wants to give other people the right to share, use, and build upon a work that they (the author) have created. CC provides an author flexibility (for example, they might choose to allow only non-commercial uses of a given work) and protects the people who use or redistribute an author’s work from concerns of copyright infringement as long as they abide by the conditions that are specified in the license by which the author distributes the work.
-
There are several types of Creative Commons licenses, the licenses differ by several combinations that condition the terms of distribution.
What Creative Commons do ?¶
-
Creative Commons is a non-profit organization dedicated to building a globally-accessible public commons of knowledge and culture.
-
They make it easier for people to share their creative and academic work, as well as to access and build upon the work of others, By helping people and organizations share knowledge and creativity, they aim to build a more equitable, accessible, and innovative world.
What Creative Commons license do ?¶
-
The Creative Commons copyright licenses and tools forge a balance inside the traditional “all rights reserved” setting that copyright law creates.
-
Creative Commons tools give everyone from individual creators to large companies and institutions a simple, standardized way to grant copyright permissions to their creative work.
-
The combination of their tools and their users is a vast and growing digital commons, a pool of content that can be copied, distributed, edited, remixed, and built upon, all within the boundaries of copyright law.
Types of Licenses :¶
- Now i will read about each license in order to choose one for my final project, so lets start !!
1. Attribution CC BY ¶
-
This license lets others distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon my work, even commercially, as long as they credit me for the original creation.
-
This is the most accommodating of licenses offered, Recommended for maximum dissemination and use of licensed materials.
2. Attribution-ShareAlike CC BY-SA ¶
-
This license lets others remix, adapt, and build upon my work even for commercial purposes, as long as they credit me and license their new creations under the identical terms.
-
This license is often compared to “copyleft” free and open source software licenses.
-
All new works based on my will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also allow commercial use.
-
This is the license used by Wikipedia, and is recommended for materials that would benefit from incorporating content from Wikipedia and similarly licensed projects.
3. Attribution-NoDerivs CC BY-ND ¶
- This license lets others reuse the work for any purpose, including commercially; however, it cannot be shared with others in adapted form, and credit must be provided to me.
4. Attribution-NonCommercial CC BY-NC ¶
- This license lets others remix, adapt, and build upon my work non-commercially, and although their new works must also acknowledge me and be non-commercial, they don’t have to license their derivative works on the same terms.
5. Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike CC BY-NC-SA ¶
- This license lets others remix, adapt, and build upon my work non-commercially, as long as they credit me and license their new creations under the identical terms.
6. Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs CC BY-NC-ND ¶
- This license is the most restrictive of our six main licenses, only allowing others to download my works and share them with others as long as they credit me, but they can’t change them in any way or use them commercially.
Deciding which license i am going to use :¶
-
For me i will chose the last license which is the “Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs CC BY-NC-ND and i have chosen this license because its the most restrictive license of them all
-
First of all what i mean by Attribution is that You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.
-
NonCommercial means that You may not use the material for commercial purposes.
-
NoDerivatives means If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you may not distribute the modified material.
-
Also this means that this license is not approved for free cultural works.
This work by Hani Al-Awmaleh is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License.
Outlining future possibilities :¶
-
The plan for my final project is to invest in it because my project has lots of features that will help lots of pet owners specially cat owners in many ways .
-
Making a thousand laser cat will not be easy but its possible because once the first laser cat is done it will be easier to debug the errors and mistakes which will lead to make the process way easier .
-
The places im planning to market my product in are : “Vet clinics”, “Markets that sells pet food” and every place that fits the idea of an automatic pet food dispenser .
-
The advantages of this product are a lot and the most important thing that it will not cost a lot to make so its cheaper than every pet food dispenser machine, also the shape of my product is unique and no one has ever made it before .
-
The main idea is to help as many cat owners as possible in the cheapest and easiest way ever and im really sure that my product will be capable of achieving this goal .
My draft Slide¶
- Here i have made a draft slide that will be filled up with all the information of my final project including a brief description and all the Techniques .
