18. Wildcard

Experimenting with Etched Glass was done during this week. A FabAcademy memorabilia!

The process 1) produce a vectorized image 2) cut the image on a vinyl material and place the material on the glass 4) sandblast the glass.

Vector Image

Roland CutStudio Software was used for producing a vector image and cutting/printing.

  • FabLab Logo was imported as an image and selected.

  • Image Outline

    Object > Image Outline…

  • Trace Contours Only

  • Delete the original, and place the tracing in the corner. Now it is ready for cutting!

Vinyl Cutting

Machine Setup

Roland GS24 Vinyl Cutter.

  • Pull down the lever
  • Place Vinyl and align the pinch rollers
  • Pull the lever up
  • On the machine screen:
  • Select the type of Vinyl (piece, roll or edge)
  • Press Enter button (the machine will measure the size of vinyl piece)
  • Optional: set the Origin using the navigation buttons.

Cutting/Printing

Roland CutStudio Software, Configure Cutting, by selecting Change… then Change… again. Get From Machine, to obtain machine measured Vinyl piece dimensions).

When pressing OK, the machine will start cutting…

Sandblasting

  • Use transfer paper to place the design from the vinyl sheet to the glass.

Conclusion

Operating the machine was straight forward, probably the easiest in FabLab Oulu. There were few things that needed to be taken into consideration: 1) it is hard to see what is happening through the glass, even with the light was on; the process had to be stopped and the machine was turned off to check on the glass 2) The optimal angle is to face the target vertically (90 degrees) and make sure there is not blasting happening to the edges under the sticker (this would destroy the sticker by peeling it off) … In the end, all was well and nice result was obtained.
