Week 10- Applications & Implications

Overview

For this week we have only an individual assignment. Propose a final project masterpiece that integrates the range of units covered. our project should incorporate:

  • 2D and 3D design.
  • Additive and subtractive fabrication processes.
  • Electronics design and production.
  • Microcontroller interfacing and programming.
  • System integration and packaging.

  • Background

Sword Art Online is a Japanese light novel series written by Reki Kawahara. The series takes place in 2022, a virtual reality massively multiplayer online role-playing game (VRMMORPG) called Sword Art Online (SAO) is released. With the NerveGear, a helmet that stimulates the user's five senses via their brain, players can experience and control their in-game characters with their minds. Both the game and the NerveGear were created by Akihiko Kayaba. On November 6, 10,000 players log into SAO's mainframe cyberspace for the first time, only to discover that they are unable to log out. Kayaba appears and tells the players that they must beat all 100 floors of Aincrad, a steel castle which is the setting of SAO, if they wish to be free.

Aincrad : is a fiction iron-and-stone made floating castle in Sword Art Online, in the anime it's declared to be the world's first VRMMORPG in history.
It's inferable that its design is symbolic for time and space. The vertical axis represents time and the circular floors represent space.

It has about ten kilometers floor base diameter and consists of a hundred floors stacking straight upwards, meaning that each floor's diameter is a bit smaller than the previous one. On each floor, there are a couple of large cities along with countless small scale towns and villages, forests, plains, and even lakes. Only one stairway links each floor to another

    Aincrad

    What will it do?

Create a real version of Aincrad using digital fabrications tools. the castle will be an interactive piece of furniture which is able to recognize the clapping sound to illuminate it's rgb-lighting system in the dark.

    Who's done what beforehand?

I couldn't find any one that built a real version of Aincrad, however I find a 3D design to the castle on Thingiverse
Also I found two youtube tutorial about how to make floating castle

    What will you design?

My idea is to design almost every part of Aincrad, from the body parts to the electronic boards, keeping in mind the size of the different components and with the aim to get a final design as integrated as possible.

Bill of material and How much will they cost?

What parts and systems will be made?

  • Castle body and base
  • Electronics.

  • What processes will be used?

  • The PCBs will be made by milling processes. And the components and sensors will be soldered by hand.
  • The programming part will be developed in Arduino-C.
  • The design process will be developed in Fusion 360
  • The structure will be made by molding & casting, 3d printing and laser cutting.

  • What questions need to be answered?

    1. how to fit all the castle structure together?
    2. how to fit all the elctronics components in the structure?
    3. how to make the castle look like it's floating in the air?
    4. will I be able to add another control mode using IR remote or a mobile phone?
    5. will I be able to add a motor to make the castle rotate in the air?

    How will it be evaluated?

To be honest I don't have much of time to finish the project 2-3 weeks maximum. so it'll not be an easy task but I hope it'll not be imposible =)

Following the concept of spiral development:

  • First spiral: detect the clapping sound, control the rgb lighting systems.
  • Second spiral: design and manfacture the castle body and base.
  • third spiral: integerate them all in paying very attention to the final packaging of the final product.
  • future spiral: add a motor and a bluetooth module to add movment and personal control to Aincrad.
