10. Input Devices

This week I worked on learning about input devices to use with an arduino or another board.

Device

The input device I will research about is the MPU6050. It is an accelerometer and a gyroscope combined.

Here you can find an arduino library and some examples for it.

Also I took a look at a Tutorial. Here it is described how to plug the pins. I will program the Arduino using the Arduino IDE.

Example Code

You can see the code below. To take a look at the serial communication I use the integrated serial monitor.

You can find it in Tools - Serial Monitor, or by pressing ctrl + shift + m.

Inside the monitor, it wants to receive a single character to start the communication channel.

By typing that random letter I can now see the gyroscope values appear. If I tilt the sensor in any direction, the given values will change.

Visual Interpretation

As an example for visually interpreting the gyroskope information, I use Processing.

Processing is an open-source software that works similar to the Arduino IDE concerning the program body.

I need to install a library here and unzip the latest folder to my processing library.

Having Processing and the Arduino prepared, I upload the Arduino software and DO NOT start the serial monitor.

The I switch to processing and start it, wait a few seconds to let the values of the sensor calm and then can see a moving 3D-object.

Inside the Arduino code I need to specify the data output for TEAPOT, so the processing program can interpret the values sent.

Works just fine!

Mathematically, the processing code is working with quaternions. It is a powerful unit that represents 3D rotation.

To get behind it completely is very tough, but I know its basics from working with Unity3D physics.

SPEAKER

I had the idea of creating a speaker that responds to the rotation of the accelerometer.

Therefore I soldered cable to a speaker (GC0351N) and connected it to GND and pin 8 of the arduino.

I connect the accelerometer as before and did some minor changes to the code example, based on an Arduino example for tones.

int speakerPin = 8;
int speakerTone = 0;
int speakerToneYaw = 0;
int speakerTonePitch = 0;
int speakerToneRoll = 0;

int notes[] = { // 89 notes
  NOTE_B0, NOTE_C1, NOTE_CS1, NOTE_D1, NOTE_DS1, NOTE_E1, NOTE_F1, NOTE_FS1, NOTE_G1, NOTE_GS1, NOTE_A1, NOTE_AS1,
  NOTE_B1, NOTE_C2, NOTE_CS2, NOTE_D2, NOTE_DS2, NOTE_E2, NOTE_F2, NOTE_FS2, NOTE_G2, NOTE_GS2, NOTE_A2, NOTE_AS2,
  NOTE_B2, NOTE_C3, NOTE_CS3, NOTE_D3, NOTE_DS3, NOTE_E3, NOTE_F3, NOTE_FS3, NOTE_G3, NOTE_GS3, NOTE_A3, NOTE_AS3,
  NOTE_B3, NOTE_C4, NOTE_CS4, NOTE_D4, NOTE_DS4, NOTE_E4, NOTE_F4, NOTE_FS4, NOTE_G4, NOTE_GS4, NOTE_A4, NOTE_AS4,
  NOTE_B4, NOTE_C5, NOTE_CS5, NOTE_D5, NOTE_DS5, NOTE_E5, NOTE_F5, NOTE_FS5, NOTE_G5, NOTE_GS5, NOTE_A5, NOTE_AS5,
  NOTE_B5, NOTE_C6, NOTE_CS6, NOTE_D6, NOTE_DS6, NOTE_E6, NOTE_F6, NOTE_FS6, NOTE_G6, NOTE_GS6, NOTE_A6, NOTE_AS6,
  NOTE_B6, NOTE_C7, NOTE_CS7, NOTE_D7, NOTE_DS7, NOTE_E7, NOTE_F7, NOTE_FS7, NOTE_G7, NOTE_GS7, NOTE_A7, NOTE_AS7,
  NOTE_B6, NOTE_C8, NOTE_CS8, NOTE_D8, NOTE_DS8
};

Initially, I added a few integers to store the values that are measured.

Additionally, I initialize an integer array that stores 89 notes, that are defined in “pitches.h”, a file that has to be created in a new tab. The content of pitches.h can be found on the above website.

I use the yaw, pitch and roll values for tone manipulation.

Although, at first I stick to only using the yaw!

speakerToneYaw = map((ypr[0] * 180/M_PI), -180, 180, 0, 88);

Above, I map the yaw value, that ranges from -180 to 180 (degrees of rotation) from 0 to 88, as is the length of the notes array.

Now, the rotation value is automatically refering to a specified note in our array.

SERVO

Lastly, I tried to have a servo interact with the sensor, to simulate some kind of one-axis gimble.

Therefore, I simply mapped the servo’s instructions und the input of the gyroscope, at least one axis of it - in this case it is the pitch.

servo.write((int)map((ypr[1] * 180/M_PI), -90, 90, 0, 180));

With this simple command it was possible to make the (very damaged..) servo react to the rotation.

/* =========================================================================
   NOTE: Arduino v1.0.1 with the Leonardo board generates a compile error
   when using Serial.write(buf, len). The Teapot output uses this method.
   The solution requires a modification to the Arduino USBAPI.h file, which
   is fortunately simple, but annoying. This will be fixed in the next IDE
   release. For more info, see these links:
