Week 16 : Wildcard

Let's say that this week is kinda unsual
We have the chance to produce whatever we want :Design and produce something with a digital fabrication process, that hasn't been covered in another assignment!
The choices are unlimited, I guess"^^ !

For this week, I was thinking of making a kind of mask out of composite since I used to make things from Papier maché!!!

And since I'm such a nerd
I wanted to make some sort of old japanese mask ; oni mask or samurai's, but 'cause of the so much details, I let down that idea, and started to think about a much simplier thing.
why dont I make 3D printed something

So I decided to make a 3D printing on a fabric

What's 3D printing on fabric

Lately, we’ve seen 3D printing make some big waves in the fashion industry and though 3D printing wearables and is revolutionizing the fashion industry still aren’t a part of our closet
3D printing is a quite new technology in this field, so not many people know how and why use it. In plus, the design of the clothes is really complex, like creating a real piece of art: it requires knwoledge in 3D modeling and 3D printing. But it is also a new way to visualize the artwork in a more realistic way before creating it since until now it was all designed in 2D and then sewed.
It's considered as an innovative technique 3D printing always surprises for its wide range of applications and not only in Fashion.

So I wanted to make a 3D printed Jewls on Fabric.

Designing

3D printing

For this part, you have to make the usual steps of printing

  • Export as stl>open it in ideaMaker

  • Choose your fabric! Materials like cotton are good since they can easily withstand the temperature of PLA. Smoothen your fabric over the print bed making sure that there are no creases or wrinkles.
For this I choose to use what we call it here a mosquito net

But as a beginning start printing and stop when the first layer of at most 1 mm is printed, bring your fabric and make sure that it sticks to the print bed, you can use double-sided tape or alternatively use clothespin clips to hold the fabric down from the edges of the print bed.

The first layer you print will soak into the fabric and bind directly to it. After you’ve checked all the settings, print as you normally would. Just be sure to occasionally check your print to see that the extruder head isn’t pulling the fabric too much.

  • After your print is done, wait for the print to cool and gently remove it from the print bed. And there, you’re all done!

  • and that's pretty much is!

I wanted to try it on my cat, as a collar but it was a big fail.
