Electric Bike Mechanic¶
The Electric Bike Store, Chicago, IL
Feb 2023 - May 2023
Repaired and upgraded electric bikes with brushless electric hub and gear motors used in harsh, all season environments of the city. Removed old or broken control systems, motors and controllers, and replaced or upgraded the components with new and or higher performance parts. Cut, spliced, and adapted wiring looms, soldering all wires for durability and longevity. Rebuilt, adjusted, and replaced standard bike parts and assemblies.
Product Design Engineer¶

Assisted fellow engineers in design for manufacturability of sand and die cast parts. Gained first-hand knowledge of sheet metal manufacturing processes. Provided detailed 2D prints to the toolroom and manufacturing to fabricate sheet metal parts. Translated customers needs into production-ready designs in three days or less.

Planned, designed, purchased, and installed automation equipment for lean manufacturing cells. Designed and built small machines and automation equipment. Trained plant personnel on robotic programming and other automated equipment usage. Worked as Process Engineer analyzing and controlling process variables for die casting of aluminum, magnesium, and zinc die casting processes.
Mold Designer¶

Designed complex die casting dies, trim tools, cast parts, and assemblies in 3D CAD. Used previous knowledge of casting technology to enhance performance on the job. Completed SolidWorks training courses in Technical Drafting and Detailing as well as Mold Design.
Process Engineer¶

1998 - 2002
Analyzed and controlled process variables for proprietary magnesium injection molding, hot chamber magnesium, hot chamber zinc and cold chamber aluminum die casting processes. Tools used: Process monitoring and control software, SolidWorks and Unigraphics CAD systems, SPC, and metal casting simulation /analysis software. Was shop floor lead on CISIRO Advanced Casting Machinery Group mini-nozzle experiments that eliminated runners and sprues allowing direct injection die casting.

1991 - 1998
Trained and supervised machine shop personnel. Initiated use of CAD systems for shop drawings and design. Set up the following: lathes, mills, drill press, gang drills, multiple spindle drills, pneumatic feeds and clamping fixtures. Performed TIG welding of large and small non-ferrous sand castings. Cost estimated new machining jobs. Designed and built machining fixtures.

I have been an General Class Amateur Radio Operator, call sign KD9JKH since 2017. I specialize in analog long distance handheld voice and high altitude television transmission in the UHF, and VHF bands. I also am experienced at tracking high altitude balloons over long distances with Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) and other tracking systems.

I have been involved with the Power Racing Series since 2010. I was the co-designer and fabricator along with two other members of the PS:One Bluesmobile build and racing team.

Dan Meyer is a Manufacturing Technologist and was the Fab Lab Senior Manager at the Museum of Science and Industry Wanger Family Fabrication Laboratory. Dan Led a team of staff and volunteers providing hands-on experiences in digital design, fabrication, as well as technical education for students, educators, and the general public. Dan also supported the International Fab Lab Network and Chicago area maker spaces. Dan has a Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing Technology. Previous to joining the museum Dan worked for over 20 years in manufacturing with a focus in high-tech metal casting processes, metal casting tooling and design for manufacturing. Later in his career Dan worked at a manufacturing non-profit teaching technical courses and managing government grant funded research to improve the performance, efficiency, and competitiveness of metal casting designs and foundry operations.

During his manufacturing career, Dan worked his way up from the shop floor as a machinist, welder and technician to positions in engineering, project management, and design. Ultimately he worked as a design engineer, researcher, and educator with the North American Die Casting Association. Dan is a member and instructor at South Side Hackerspace: Chicago. In 20212 Dan served as Director at Large at Pumping Station: One, hackerspace. Dan received his Associate in Applied Science in Manufacturing Technology from Prairie State College and a Bachelors of Applied Science Degree in Manufacturing Technology and Management from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Dan is a Manufacturing Technologist: a combination of a Scientist, Manufacturing Technician and Engineer. Dan resides in Chicago, with his spouse Jet, in an apartment, most of which is occupied by bicycles, computers, tools and machines for digitally designing and fabricating radio controlled aircraft and other objects.
