17. Wildcard Week¶
For this week, I was experimenting with fiber glass in order to create the transparent ring for my lamp.
I did not end up using it but the process was very fun.
Steps¶
-
Protection eyeglasses, robe & if deemed very detailed work, mask. It was during a pandemic, so everyone had a mask on :)
-
making the mold using the CAM with polystyrene foam, aka XPS.
-
There was many types of fiber glass that depend on density, pattern & colour at formX. I will definitely look more deeply into that if I decide spend more time on composite.
-
Getting the epoxi.
Based on the datasheet
The proportion of component
A & B are 100 41.
The curing time
is 14 mins.
-
The layering was as follows: mould –> plastic –> layers fiber glass and then a layer to absorn all the excess epoxi so it doesn’t stick on the vacuum bag. then having to suck all the air out before the curing time is over.
Final result & Learnings¶
My donut turned out too yellow, due to the quality of the fiber glass and epoxi colour. This is something to take into consideration for next time.
The finishing was quity ugly. That is probably due to the fact that I did not cut the fiber glass into small pieces and place them one by one. The time was a factor. But still, it could have been done differently
