Week One

~ Principles and Practices, Presentations, Introductions ~

Key activities / Learnings / Inspiration

This is the first week!!! I was very excited to be part of FabAcademy classes, this has been my biggest wish since 3 years ago. I was very surprised to see a large number of people from all the continents with different time zones attending the class. During presentations, I was very impressed by the creativity and inventiveness of the presenters. I loved seeing all the fablabs & participants around the world, how the class was set up, offering a safe open space for like-minded people to share knowledge. During introductions, It was very interesting to hear about everyone's ambition, purpose and goals by attending FabAcademy, which is making a project that solve a certain social challenge.

I had a chance to learn more about the Fab lab community and what to expect by joining the community. Today there is 1600 Fab labs in the world! I am so grateful to be part of it, how open it is and how easy to collaborate with different fabricators around the world. My wish is to have more and more people joining Fab labs to create solutions that solve the world's pressing issues nowadays such as climate change, quality education, hunger and employment. My main goal is to give my contribution to above challenges.

During the learning session, we were introduced to a very interesting book that i would like to recommend. It is entitled:"Designing Reality, how to survive and thrive in the third digital revolution". I also learned about digital revolutions, how this started till now. My biggest inspiration was a statement stated about the Future of work: Individuals making what they consume and Fab Academy' mission on HOW TO MAKE ALMOST ANYTHING.

Moreover, I was afraid that the instructor may not be engaging, But I was amazed at how Neil could seemingly remember every project and point the students to things that might be helpful to them! He is so amazing, you can just listen to him for hours without getting any distraction. He made me feel more and more excited to attend the classes, to learn and be open minded.

Assignment: Plan and sketch a potential final project

Thinking about my final project, I would like to do a project that will show everything I've learned each week, innovative and impactful. I'm thinking of making a plant health sensor that has a LED acting as a plant watering indicator that will blink when a plant needs water.

Questions & Challenges

How do I make sure that my project (is a good one) really valuable and impactful? How do I make sure that I do not run out of time while documenting and publishing my assignments? How do I make sure that I collaborate, learn properly, learn from others, explore resources available on the platform to grow my knowledge and contribute to my final project?

Proposed solutions

Learn to document as you work, the final project doesn't need to be a product, make sure that it shows what you've learned and how it connect to a social challenge. You can learn from others by exploring Fab inventions, Fabricademy ...
