13. Applications and implications¶
This week I will:
- Propose a final project that integrates the range of units covered.

What will it do? My cardboard boat will provide water transportation; my electronics will provide water temperature indication and a distress signal if necessary.

Who’s done what beforehand? Although others have made a boat, I am not aware of anybody making a cardboard boat other than dswaim, the author I am following, who posted the instructable at https://www.instructables.com/id/Cardboard-Kayak-part-1/

What will you design? I will design the carboard boat from dswaim, but I will make sections to enable fabrication using a 24” x 18” bed laser cutter. I will design the wearable for temperature input and output as well as the distress signal electronics.

What materials and components will be used? I will use recycled cardboard and electronic parts from the Fab Lab inventory.

Where will come from? Cardboard is from shipping material used to provide our replacement furniture. Other materials and components will come from the Fab Lab inventory that was salvaged from the GOCAT Fab Lab flood of 2017.

How much will they cost? No new materials or components will be purchased; they will be from the salvaged inventory.

What parts and systems will be made? Temperature sensor and LCD display.

What processes will be used? CAD, Frame building using the ShopBot, Laser cutting of cardboard, subtractive manufacturing using the Roland SRM-20, composite development and soldering.

What questions need to be answered? Will I have sufficient time to complete this cycle?

How will it be evaluated? Sea trials and cardboard boat contest. Instructor and Global Evaluation.
