- Make something big
Context¶
La Machinerie runs a coworking space. Workers are housed in an open office and extended phone calls can sometimes disturb the community. To improve the comfort of all, we want to install one or two phone booths.

Acoustic treatment¶
During the development of the building we already had to perform the acoustic treatment of a meeting room. For this, we relied on the skills of our colleagues specialized in acoustics and applied their recommendations to know: absorb the sound at the source. To do this we made this kind of wall:
- Section plan:
- 1: Perforated plasterboard
- 2: Geotextile membrane (to not clog the insulation )
- 3: Rockwool (to absorb and dissipate the noise)
- 4: Existing wall
Building technique¶
We decided to design a module assembly for:
- experiment with this type of design
- limit the size and number of elements
- to assemble / disassemble and modify the cabin easily
-
move the cabin easily

Design¶
The design has been made with fusion 360.

Module fabrication process¶
Assembly test¶
I was able to test the assembly of modules successfully, the fabrication of all he needed parts to create a human-sized structure are scheduled later this year.
Results & comments¶
Initial design was filled of Holes, which took a very long time to produce. We decided to change from holes to lines, which is easier and lets us machine the entire job with the same tool. The use of a drill of 10mm, even well sharpened makes marks of burns.
This Modification of the drilling allow to accelerate the machining on the ShopBot. For the manufacture of one module and half, it’s necessary to get 2 drilled panels and one without hole. For 900 holes of 10mm this represented 4h30 of machining. The holes was replaced by oblong holes (machined into pockets in Vcarve). The coverage is 18.3% => reduction of the machining time to about 1h30 and without burns.
Assembly on each module works fine, but the Keys between modules do not allow to make it Strong alone. This means we will have to add some join plates to make it more robust after the full cabin assembly.
