3D Scanning¶
As a fabmanager, I use 3D scanning since 2013 with different kind of technic such as :
- With a kinect or PrimeSense a and the soft Skanect
- With DIY laser scanner
- Wit David Laser scanner

But, there is a technic I’ve never use, It’s photogrammetry. So for this week I decided to test some photogrammetry software.
My model¶
To test the softwares, I used a series of photos of a stuffed toy belonging to my daughter . To take the photos, I used my canon 80D Reflex and put my lens on 50mm.
The model | The camera | The parameters of the camera |
---|---|---|
Tip
To take the different pictures of the model, I’ve never change the parameters of the lens ( 50mm ) and I use my reflex in manual mode. I set my device at the beginning of the shooting session and never change it. I also use a cobra flash not oriented directly onto the model to avoid reflexion and to have a similar and soft light on the model.
AliceVision¶
AliceVision is a free and opensource photogrammetric software.
To install it I followed [this link on the github project of AliceVision.](https://github.com/alicevision/meshroom.
But after reading it, I discover that it will not work for me because, on a Mac, it need a dedicated nVidia GPU. And as I have a MacBook pro with an intel iris GPU, it will not be possible to build the sources.
OpenMVG¶
I also try OpenMVG but not able to install it on my Mac.
Regard3D¶
I succeed in installing Regard3D. I launch it and put my pictures into the software.
The software | Import menu | My pictures imported |

Step 1 | Step 2 | Finish soon … |

But after 52 min, I’ve got nothing and the software tell me that 0 matches were found … I decided to try another software before re-trying Regard3D
MetashapePro¶
MetashapePro is a commercial software. You can use a basic or a pro version. There is a trial version for 30 days. The basic version is affordable ( 179$ ) but the pro is … well … it’s a pro version 3 499$ …
I took the trials on the pro version, launch the software, import the picture and try the tool alignment tool … And it took me 6h on my little mac …
The software | Importing my pictures | 6 hours of work … |

But the result of the cloud point is impressive :
So, as it woks pretty well, I decided to build a model using this cloud point… And let’s go for 15 hours of work .

And the result is very impressive :
