1. Principles and practices¶
This week was an introduction week, where we introduced ourself to our classmates and we got briefed on the coming assignments. We were asked to think of an end project and were asked to briefly present our ideas. My first idea for my final project was to create a search and rescue drone for the Amazone jungle and this idea I also presented. Later on, I decided to pursue another concept as final project, which was to mimmic the feats of the mythological Hammer of Thor Odinson, Mjolnir in a full contact sport called Hammerfield.
Note: I had a lot of projects in mind, which I tried during the past month. My Final project is descrideb here: Final project page.
Final Project :¶
HAMMERFIELD
My Final Project is to finalize a new sport I invented in 2012 after being inspired by Mjolnir, the mighty hammer of Thor in the Avangers movies.¶
Research¶
“Hammerfield is a full contact sport inspired by the blockbuster movie ‘’The Avengers’‘. The Hammer in Hammerfield called “Amrah” is based on the mythological hammer Mjolnir of Thor Odinson, the god of thunder. The myth tells us that Mjolnir never missed its target and always returned to Thor’s right hand. In English Mjolnir means ‘’crusher’‘ and Thor was the only one who could lift it. Mjolnir
In Hammerfield you score by throwing a hammer at the goal or jumping and hitting the goal. The goal is a bell which hangs three meters above the ground. INSTRUCTION VIDEO¶
Equipment Required:¶
- 1 Drone hammer that looks like Thor’s mjolnir, with the capability to return to the right hand of the hammer bearer.
- 2 bell shaped speakers when hit play a epicbell sound - the goals.
- 1 5x5x5cm sticky LED cube that sticks to the armor and changes color according to the rules.
- 14 Protective foam armor for the players .
The Field¶
The field is 68 meters wide and 100 meters long and each half consist of 6 “safe zones”, which has a diameter of 6 meters. Every “safe zone” consist of 2 parts. In the middle of the field there is a “center safe zone” which has a diameter of 8 meters. Along the edges of the field there are the outer lines. Safe zone 1 is to secure the hammer and safe zone 2 is the free for all zone.
Players¶
Each team consist of eight players on the field plus reserves. Of these 8 players there are 4 hammer bearers and 4 soldiers. The hammer bearers are responsible for making points. Only the 4 hammer bearers are allowed to bear the hammer. In defense the hammerers can receive and pass the cube. The soldiers are responsible for defending the hammer bearers. They make sure that the defensive team cannot tackle their hammer bearer.
Scoring¶
There are 3 ways to score:
- By throwing the hammer at the bell from a distance, a hit is worth 3 points.
- Jumping and hitting the bell while holding the hammer is worth 2 points.
- Hitting soldiers who dont posses the cube is worth 1 point.
Tackling¶
The players in the defensive team can only tackle a hammer bearer (with hammer) when in possession of the cube. The soldiers of both teams can put pressure on their opponents but are not allowed to tackle unless they are in possession of the cube. The tackle that is used in Hammerfield is the same as the rugby tackle, so you can tackle from the waist down but you cannot tackle from the waist up.
Starting the Game¶
The game start when the referee puts the hammer in the center safezone1, after which the offense appoints a hammer bearer to start the offense. The players of both teams are standing around the outside of the center safezone2 on their own half. When the hammer bearer touches the hammer the starting signal is blown and the hammer bearer has 3 seconds to make his move. The moment the hammer leaves the ground the defense can attack and the game begins.”
The goal of my project is to make the Hammer returned to the hand of the one who wields it after being thrown.
However, after feedback from Neil, I decided to think about some other final projects and these are the options:
Option 1:
The ‘satekite’.¶
This is a kite that is equipped to stay as long as possible in the air for search and rescue purposes. Here you see the first concept of the kite: I was thinking of a multifunctional shape by shifting its shape from a kite to a glider, but soon I realised I needed it to function as long as possible, so less moving parts are better. So, I went back to the drawing board and thought of keeping the shape of the kite but modifying it to the form of a wing. So when driven by propellers it can remain airborn.
As I was designing the new shape in fusion, I thought of many possibilities and I realised that the shape of the traditional hexagon kite was due to limitations of the time. So, I let go of the part of the hexagon shape to try new options.
Option 2:
Documenting necklace¶
Due to my inability to record everything I am doing through the day, I want to design a necklace to assist me by documenting by adding a camera and some other gadgets.
Here you see the concept: Each ball will house a different set of tools. I am now researching ways to actuating the whole length of the necklace by driving a metal wire through the necklace and controlling it with a brake by wire system. I am still in the design process.
Option 3:
The ‘plantprinter’¶
This is a 3D printer, but instead of plastic I use sunlight to guide the growth path of the plant by redirecting sunlight through a glass fiber cable to shape the plant to the design of choice The machine must move at the same growth speed as the plant, so I am thinking of actuating it with nylon artificial muscles using the heat from the sunlight
I am researching ways to create the nylon muscles. These are not easy to make.
I will decide which of these options are the most doable for my final project.
