4. Computer controlled cutting

This weeks assignment gave me several challenges. One of which was figuring out the kerf measurements for the interlocking planes for my design. I looked at different concepts from passed students for this one.

Research

So I created a few 2d designs that had the same dimensions and scaled it at any size. From what I understand this techinque is a signifcant step in parametric design. Simply because ,it’s the dimensions of the paramaters of the object that is basis of how the object can be scaled. This initial process was done in corel draw and then finlaized in fusin 360.

The first attempt did not go as planned the spaces in the interlocking point did not have the correct kerf. The inner thickness didn’t match the outer thickness. So the pieces would not stay together….Frustrating….to say the least.

The second attempt was much more promising. What I did was take the measurement of the edge thickness of the cardboard and key them into fusion 360.

From there I loaded the file into Corel Draw and used the epilog laser cutter to cut out the design.
