Computer-Controlled Machining

Group Assignment

In our laboratory we have CNC router multicam 3000. Our first task was to test two types of trajectory that the machine can do, male and female.

Test

Test 1

Both cut off the line axis of the design, in the example we can see that the internal piece can’t pass through the ring. Although, both were designed in the same plane and have the same cutting line.

Test 2

For the design we follow the suggestion of our local instructor, the cnc can cut continuously if we consider the length of the cutting corner. For the test we use a mill of 3/16”, for this reason we leave an effective space of 4.9 mm, as you can see in the pictures.

If the hole of the dogbone was smaller, first we have to machine the holes and then the cutting.

Test 3

We tried to create a kerf pattern that allows the plywood to be flexible, but we failed in the geometry design and when we tried to bend it broke.

Then, we tried another kerf pattern with higher speed than the previous test, we observe that more speed produces more waste. Due to the anisotropic characteristics of the wood, the material that was subtracted perpendicular to the main direction of the test doesn’t show the overall structural capacity. In this way, it achieves a curve that exceeds our expectations.
