About me¶
Zainab Abdulrahman is a final year Mechanical engineering student. She is an ambitious person that sees herself as mechanical engineer in the future. She believes that women are able to join the engineering industry and be good as men. To become a good engineer, it is important to be a quick learner, have problem solving and management skills. She decided to study mechanical engineering because she loves physics and math.
As a result of studying at Bahrain Polytechnic, she became a self-confident and hard-working woman. Because the learning technique applied in Bahrain polytechnic is problem-based learning that is teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question, problem or challenge.
She had experienced the work environment of mechanical engineer and learned how to use the mechanical machines like milling and center lathe machines. Furthermore, she learned the main principles of mechanical engineering such as engineering graphics by using Solidworks, fluid mechanics thermodynamics principles, manufacture, control and material science. And according to this she manufactured a steam engine as an individual project and worked with her colleagues in projects such as designing and manufacturing a load carrier vehicle for the university as well as subsonic wind tunnel for experimental purposes in fluid mechanics for year 2 students.
In 2014 Zainab and her team invented PES which stands for Parking Efficiency System. By using engineering methods and Arduino. The system solves the double-parking problem in Bahrain. The experience made her explore herself and improve her project management skills. In April 2015 Zainab and her team were the first university team to participate in VEX World Championship which is about building and programming robot based on engineering challenges. The championship improved her technical and communication skills. She gained leadership skills and learned how to program using basic C+ language.
Final Project¶
Her final project is about designing and building a sociable Human Robot. A Robot that will designed, manufactured, programmed and, tested for using it in schools and universities purposes and community. The robot will have 4DOF (minimum) and the physical construction of this robot will consist of a head that is eligible to rotate 180 degrees, neck, body, two arms that can move in one direction and base (omni-directional). Further point, the range of height will be between 500 to 600 mm and its weight between 10 to 15kg. This robot will be capable to interact with humans and its main functions are: introduce herself, talk, shake hands, have an interactive screen which can play a video and mobile in all directions.
