  1. WEEK TASK : For the week´s assignment the goal is : define the scope of a Final Project and develope a project plan
    1. Question i have answered

WHAT WILL IT DO?

My Final Project is a Kite protototype as a tool for learn to kids the enviromental respect. The device is designed for to be flight close to the Atlantic Sea during my summer camps. The Kite have a sensor which will to detect presences of Gases in the sky and will to send this values according to a range to ledlights at kite´s connectors.

WHO´S DONE BEFORE HAND?

I couldn´t to find people that made the same before. I found the "OPEN KITE" a project from :

Open Kite Reference
.

He made his Kite with 3D printer technology and other digital tools for designed it but don´t involve elecronics. The project brief was about designing a product for play. While he was trying to explore the world of play, he was fascinated by Little Shining Man (Heather & Ivan Morrison, 2011), a huge cube shape kite which consists of hundreds of tetrahedral cells. Originally, Alexander Graham Bell invented this type of kite as a form of airplane about a hundred year ago (Frost King, 1904) and Heather & Ivan Morrison translated Bell's invention into a flying sculpture.

During Composite Assignment Neil suggested me take a look about big and crazy project :

I found a guy who develope the iot system for a kite with Arduino and this references can be usefull for next version of my kite.

WHAT MATERIALS AND COMPONENTS WILL BE REQUIRED?

For the Final Project the materials and components required are specific for accomplish the technical specifications.

I described all materials answering HOW MUCH IT COST below.

WHERE WILL THEY COME FROM?

The materials for sew the Kite and the fiber carbon tubes will they come from locals vendors, they will be bought to Alainmar S.L, people who learned me a lot about the mechanisms for made a kite fly.

For fabrication will come from fablab inventory, local vendors and mostly recycled.First i want to mention is during the project design process, one day, i received a call from a friend who was interested in the idea and inmediately asked me about the cost and how much money i was spending...my answer was clear. Probably i haven´t money for make the project so i must to save all money possible.

2 days later... When a packet from his company OZU-Tarifaarrived to my home i was crying for a time. My Kite have the name of my dog, he born in Cádiz and my friend loved him a lot. Is a lovely act. Thanks Elias!

He remembered me something that i know : HOW IF YOU EXPRESS YOUR EMOTIONS AND PASSION WITH A PROJECT YOU CAN HAVE A SUPPORT.

HOW MUCH IT COST?

WHAT PARTS AND SYSTEM WILL BE MAKE?

1. Design and Cut Patterns and Sew them : Sew allowances and hems + Sew the Squares + Sew Tabs (Time Stimated 6h)

2. Design and Print the L connectors : My own Diedro Design (30h + 9h)

3. Design and Print the caps for rods (3h + 3h)

4. Design, Mill the electronics boards (8h + 2h )

5. Solder boards + Test them (3h + 1h)

6 Program Networking between boards. (20h)

7. Design how to assemble parts (3h)

8. Assembled (2h)

9. Fly the Kite with all!

10. Make the Slide fro presentation (3h)

11. Made the video for presentation (20h)

WHAT TASK NEED TO BE COMPLETED?

1. Cut Patterns and Sew them : Sew allowances and hems + sew the Squares and tabs

2. Design and Print the L connectors : Testers and Finals

3. Design and Mill the electronics boards

4. Solder boards + Test them

5 Program Networking between boards.

7. Design how to assemble parts

8. Assembled

9. Fly the Kite with all!

10. Make the Slide for presentation

11. Made the video for presentation

12. Fly the Kite with all!

WHAT PROCESSES WILL BE USED?

  • Laser Cutter Machine for Cut Fabrics.

  • 3D Printer for Caps and L- Connectors

  • Electronics Milling for boards fabrication

  • Solder the boards and checks for Sensors and Actuators

  • Networking for communication boards

  • Programing

WHAT QUESTIONS NEED TO BE ANSWERED?

    PRESENTATION?

I´m really worried about the presentation for the project because i haven´t the enough wind forces for fly my Kite with all components, my design involve his use at the beach, is designed for fly close to the Atlantic and the difference with Madrid is abismal.

    THE SENSOR

The sensor have some questions for to be answered is an analog sensor with really specific operation it works outside detecting the CO2 so callibrate it during the process is not easy. It looks difficult so i need help from my instructor. Also it must to be preheated 12 a 24h previously his use, distribute the time spent for his use in my schedule is a battle.

I need to ask the question about the networking because i didn´t finish this assignment i must to begin from the 0.

Where i had time for all to make?

    THE BIG QUESTIONS

How to answer to the big question about the weight of my kite or any kite with the electronics assembled and that system allow to fly the kite ?

How to focuss in a factible prototype?

I´m working with stimated values always so it´s difficult to know the real weight. For the moment i know the stimated about the fabrics, the fiber carbon tubes, the conectors, the lipo baterries, some boards, the wires...but for where i make my calculates? for Madrid wind? for the Atlantic range?

What is the appropiate dimension for a kite with electronics and which other process can be worked?

    HOW TO ASSEMBLE

Obviously the process don´t involve conductive fabrics process so i use wires and copper boards. I designed a system for hide the main wires but i don´t know how to distribute the rest of the components by their own weights in the rest of the kite, how to use the forces in benefit of the flight.

    WHAT IS THE SCHEDULE?

During the Academy i was researching a lot because as i mentioned i haven´t experience in nothing about the process but for this final time i made a timeline webpage for show what i can to do each day from 27th of May to 14th of June. This Date is an stimate suggested by our instructor for have a deadline clear.

We have 3 weeks for make the project, but this is not realistic for me because our fablab close the weekends and i have my finals at the job. This means that i have 4 days with not Academy works during the week and must to made the things during the nights using the fablab after this nights for hours. I made my timeline webpage which i will upload this week for documented each day worked. So my idea is :

  • 1st/2nd WEEK :

    - Design : The main parts such as L Connector and Cap for Rod + Print testers / Final Patterns / Boards

    - Build and Fabrication : Cut Laser Testers + Cut Patterns / Sew the Kite + Milling and solder Boards + Wiring

  • 3rd WEEK :

    - Programing : Testers + Interfacing + Final / Flight´s Testers

  • 4th WEEK :

    - Documentation : video + slide / Final programing codes and pics

    HOW WILL BE EVALUATE?

As my Guru said me at the last review my project can be a project for develope during the rest of my life because involve a mix of disciplines for long and depth study.

One of this is the Aerodinamics Science and the other is the Electronics. I´m not expertise in nothing about it so all the process is an experiment for learn me about physics, gravity, wind forces, kites mechanisms... So all turn as a real challenge for me. The project must to be evaluated if I have the main things :

  • A Design Pattern working and fabricated with technologies learned during the Diploma : 2D software + Laser Technology

  • Design parts working and fabricated with technologies learned during the Diploma : 3D Software + 3D Printers

  • An Input device working or not but i must to have : The Sensor callibration explanained with the method learned at the Diploma : Electronics Design + Mill + Solder + Programing

  • An Output devices : Leds working (is easy device so i think they must to blink)

  • Conclusions in all process, as every process involve new conclusions i think this is a really important part. I think i must to answer about other process, new questions....

  • If the project is a point for beging with something bigger let me a chance because a discovered that i want to make kites for a long time. I begin a big process to have my final product, a basic workshop for learn to my kids ;)
