WEEK 14 : Wildcard Week (Digital - Fabrication (Pun Intended)

This week in wildcard week At Vigyan Ashram , we have sewing lab on premises . This lab contains the following machine which is called the USHA Janome .illustrated in the above picture . This machine has a workable area of 14x14 cms . This allows the area of 14cm x 14cm to be worked on at a time . THe input format for this machine is png files . These files first need to be fed into the software which comes preinstalled with the machine . The machine has a USB interface . The software used for this process is the Digitizer Junior .which comes pre-packaged with the machine .

Process of generating the toolpaths from a png file

Importing the image into the software which is known as "Digitizer Junior" .

Positioning the file in the frame to determine the position

Reducing the available colours in the image to use it with specific colours which will be used to embroider .

Software allows you to select the areas to embroidered and select specific coloured string to embroider i.e it generates specific toolpaths for specific coloured string. The image highlighted show the word "Riddhi". This higlighted portion is where a continous toolpath is generated .

Saving the toolpaths on the pendrive to be saved for them to be transfered to the machine .

The actual fabrication process

Laying out the material required on the table . Important being the "backing paper" which prevents the cloth from being torn. The violet cloth is the cloth on which the letters will be embroidered.

Aligning the part to be cut from the stock . The frame of the machine is 2 part frame which enables the cloth to be held tightly during the whole process.

The entire assembly is loaded into the frame and the 2 part frame locked into place.

Loading the frame in the

Following are the 3 types of stiches that the machine makes to fill the area to be embroidered . In the process is

1. Outline stitch : The machine will first draw the outline of the area to be embroidered . This is the lowest density stich

2. Meduim Stitch : This is the circular stichining which is the circular stitch

3. Final Stich : This the horzontal stitch of the highest density . This is the final finish of the embroidery

Process completed and the frame still on the machine.
