My Final Project : FAB-ROVER

Fixed wing aircraft

My goals

Building an aircraft is a passion for me , since I was a child. That’s why I am an aircraft engineer. Which it will help me a lot with this project. I did some similar projects on the past by building aircraft models from foam, wood, depron foam, balsa wood and composite, however I did it all by using only my hand skills and some commercial components. The chellenge this time will be that I will use some machines, processes and designing skills that I learned here in Fab Academy to build my model and fly it.

I will talk about:-

  1. Why did I change my mind.

Changing my mind

I did choose a final project on the beginning of the FAB academy course, a smart tool box, but when I start to learn through the weekly assignments I just decided to something I love. I could do this for hundreds of years without being bored and look for imporvements all the time. So I change my project to a flying fixed wing aircraft.

Going crazy

To be honest, every time I finshed the class my mind was going crazy and i start to think about a new idea to try on my final project. In input devices week after the class I just decide to control my aircraft by a new transmitter, that I will use a touch pad on, however in Interface and Application week, I started to think to use my mobile phone to fly the aircraft. I was wondering how can I connect two boards via bluetooth, one is transmitting and the other receiving the commands and control my output which will be the servo motors and the brushless motor. So finally on the Networking and Communication week, I figure out everything I need to build my amazing project .

Fabracation

So in order to build my aircraft, and meet the requirments for the final project, I need some of the skills that I learnt in Fab Academy, such as designing and making my PCB, 3D printing that will help me a lot to reduce the cost of my project by printing some component that will help controling the aircraft, 3D milling on the shobot and using a vacumm former that will allow me to make a mold for my aircraft body. Of course as I said before, I will use my intellegent PCBs with a smart programme, and bluetooth connection that will make for me the perfect networking, and finally i am waiting for the wild card week, to build my model from a composite with the vaccum formed mould.

    MY design

I have my own design of delta wing aircraft which I designed when I wanted to proof to myself that I can do all the calculation and I can build my own aircraft from scratch, so I design it in 2D using Autocad as shown on the photo below, measurements in centimetres:

So after designing it I build my first model out of foam, and it did fly, but was not stable enough so I did some modification on the design and I tried it again. It flew perfectly , unfortunatly I did not attached the battery correctly, so the battery fall down to the ground the power went off and the aircraft crashed, so this time I would like to use my own design with some simple modification .

I have also onother design that i want to try, because with this design i can fly the aircraft on closed area or on parks , so it will not fly high , which it will help me to connect via bluetooth and control the aircraft by a mobile application.

The biggest Chellenge

So my biggest chellenges will be to control the aircraft by my own transmitter that I will build out of push button and variable resistor to control the brushless motor, that will communicate with the reciever via bluetooth and for the other aircraft I will make a mobile application that will help me to control the aircraft. I hope you understand what I am trying to say from my sketch drawing and explanation.
