Week 3 Assignment:Computer Aided Design

Vector v/s Raster

Raster image uses pixels where vector image uses shapes and lines to render an image. BMP, TIFF, JPG, GIF PNG etc are examples for popular raster files.Since vector image uses smooth shapes and lines to render an image, it is the best option when printing images. Vector images offer an easy way for designers and graphic artists to edit visual images, since they can alter components in a vector image without losing quality.

Gimp

First I tried to start with Gimp. In gimp, I tried to combine two images together. As new to designing and editing images I tried only simple editing on images the softwares I tried and also some of my friends and lot of youtube.com, videos helped me to design and draw images.

Here I selected two different images and combined it. I made one as base image and the other in which I made modifications and finally combined together.

Photoshop

The next option which I opted was photoshop which I did simple editings one time before. So it was much more easier than thart of gimp for me.Both Gimp and Photoshop are raster images. As photoshop is there in windows I used my other lap to work with.

Inkscape

The next I opted was Inkscape. Comparing the other two, inkscape is vector editor and its mainly used for logo creation and as such designing. The options for Inkscape comparing gimp and photoshop are lesser.

Autocad

Then I started to work with my project. So I thought before getting a 3d its better to obtain a 2d and so I selected autocad.I first draw a front view and then an isometric view of the object. A wooden frame and nine trays is my plan. Total 41.3cm length, 22.6cm height and 12cm depth. Each tray I am planning to do is 7cm height and 12.7cm length. So as per it I worked on AutoCad.

SkectchUp

Over 3d aspect I first started with sketchup, eventhough its not much advanced than that of 3ds max or rhino, its easier to handle with and as a starter it gives an idea about what 3d is going to make a difference and how can it be drawn.

Blender

Blender which is not scalable is much more difficult for me compared to the other ones. So want to go with few more tuitorils regarding that.

3ds Max

Regarding 3ds max its an effective software to create 3d objects. The main difficulty which I faced for this image is that giving light and then rendering. Shortcuts for creating images also helped to draw the object.Variety of material samples in this will also helps to obtain precise images for the designers

Rhino
Rhino which is similar to 3ds Max is also an effective software to obtain 3d images. For me as a starter Rhino was much easier than 3ds Max. Simple concept and logic helped to obain the right image. I used co-ordinate positioning methode in Rhino to obtain the image. For more number of trays in my image it would be difficult implement. May be we can use other methods too rhino which I need to explore.
