Week 18 : Applications and Implications

Objectives

  • The assignment is to plan and document the relevent questions for the final project that integrates a range of units covered.
  • About my Final Project

    What will it do?

The an All Terrain Car which have a motion sensor(or ultra sonic sensor)

  • The Master could control and drive the car through his mobile phone using a bluetooth sensor,
  • Also the motion sensor gives the feedback to the Master
  • \

    Who's done what beforehand?

I have searched the internet for similar projects and i came across a few projects in the instructables relating to the bluetooth driven DC car, see below links.

  • Bluetooth controlled RC car by Dzefri
  • Open MenuOpen Source Turtle Robot (OSTR) by MakersBox
  • ADAFRUIT MOTOR SHIELD TUTORIAL By TrungT4

  • Then also seen a Fab project not similar to my project but somewhat useful,
  • YLi , FABRICATION LAB Harvard, Fab Academy 2013
  • What will you design?

I have to design my mother board .

I have to design the chassis of the car.
    Specifically
  • the Base.
  • The top and side covers
  • Four Wheels.

  • Then the two motor holders.

What materials and components will be used?

  • Two DC motors
  • PIR motion sensor / Ultra sonic sensor
  • Bluetooth Sensor
  • Controller Board with ATtiny 44 (if necessary also the Input Week Board)
  • Motor Driver
  • Battery
  • Craft Wood
  • Acrylic
  • PLA material for 3D printing
  • Screws
  • Glue GUn
  • LEDs (only extra )
  • Where will the components come from?

In our FabLab we have the microcontrollers , DC motors, PIR motion snesor, Batteries, Craft wood, Acrylic Sheet, and the 3d printing PLA.

The motordriver and Bluetooth sensor should be purchased online

    How much will they cost?

Most of the components are from fab inventory. Even taking that into account the total cost will be less than 35 USD ( less than 2400 INR).

What parts and systems will be made?

The chassis and physical parts are all made myself in the Fablab

The electronic parts are made using the fab inventory except the bluetooth sensor and motor shield

I would try to make a motor driver myself if I get the time

    What processes will be used?

  • Laser Cutting (Trotec Speedy 100) or Shopbot for machining the base of the car
  • Laser cutting (Trotec Speedy 100) the top cover for car
  • 3D Printing (Ultimaker2) the Wheels(x4)
  • 3D Printing (Ultimaker2) the motor Holders(x2)
  • Milling (Roland MDX 20) the ATtiny 44 controller board
  • Vinyl Cutter (Roland GX-24) for cutting the Poster and Name Tag
  • 2D and 3D designing using the Fusion 360 and Solidworks
  • Autodesk Eagle for designing the board
  • What questions need to be answered?

I need a lot of help in Interfacing, Networking and graphical user interface part.
Me only having amateur skills in electronics will be a challenge in completing this

    How will it be evaluated?

It will be a huge achievement and proud feeling for me to make this project work. From a Newbee to the one that could build an operative Robot with four wheels will be enough for my bit of happiness and pride

But i would suggest you to evaluate me on the basis of the design, networking and communication between motion sensor, controller board, motor driver , motors and bluetooth sensor, also the interface between the phone and the Robot.

Why did you decide to this project?

I was always amazed with Robots and moving machines, wanted to build them myself someday.
I joined Fab Academy to learn the making of these machines and now I have build one myself
I like in making the machines that can be controlled with just a touch of our fingers and at the same time the machine could self control itself. The whole of this vehicle is made in such a way that it is an integration of different skills.

How will you (or others ) use your project?

This is a project for people who love to build small machines that could move.

People could use my project and learn the steps in making a Belt Driven Car, they could know how to interface with bluetooth sensors, they could use my programs to make the bluetooth interface and drive the motors

I have improved my program to include the ultrasonic sensor for the Car to decide itself when obstacles come in front

Could you define the scope of your project?

I see my project as the integration of all those processes and skills learned throughout this course.

This car falls under search and rescue vehiles which are used for disastor area mapping and manuevering , fire fighting , bomb disposal etc,

I would like to improve my project by using multiple Ultrasonic sensor attached around the vehicle to make it more self driving and also a camera to give feeds
I would like to get response feedbacks from the bot

and i wish someday i could make a robotic vehicle which have better self driving and reacting capabilities.
