Dissemination of my product

My Fab corn machine will be a available at all open source platforms such as thingiverse, inscrutable, and git hub which will allow other user to create similar machine and increase the publicity of it. If everything did work properly, I will move forward and create a full automated fresh pop corn vending machine. Having a full automated pop corn vending machine could actually be a very successful project with high income rate. I am thinking of having such a machine at the fab labs cafes around the world, the next step will be start marketing it to Cinemas, theaters,parks,and Schools. Let be honest who hates fresh pop-corn !!

Pop-corn vending machine

My final aim is to reach to a self automated fresh pop-corn vending machine which can be placed anywhere. To reach to change some design of the machine, the machine must be large in order to contain a large amount of popcorn, increase the reliability of the machine and safety especially as it going to be self automated. I have to conduct more research on some vital topic below in order to ensure that machine would be probable to make and sell.

  1. I must change the method of removing pop-corn by dropping it into an available pop-corn box (cartoon) available inside the machine. To do that I need mechanism to transfer the ready pop-corn into the box. Having a box below the pot and flipping the pot so the pop-cron get to the box is a way, but I ll honestly prefer a way where some kind of dispense mechanism moves the pop-corn to the box without running the outside shape of the poped corn.
  2. I will be using a spray oil instead of the normal oil, where it would be more hyganic to use as it would be moved via tube and as the same time it would be easy to spray. It would be very similar to the air freshener dispense mechanism
  3. Introduce some kind of currency detector in order to be able to collect money. This could be done via a optical sensor (small light detecctor) and magnetic reader to verify the magnetic signature. Or using ultraviolet sensor.
  4. The outside design should be more appealing to attract customers and buyers. I do believe an acrylic outside design would give it an awesome look.
  5. A friendly GUI interface with an LCD display
  6. A more food safe material that PLA, or I could give a coat to PLA

One of the users of our fab lab have actually done a very lovely vending machine that targets school and helps kids recycle cans (pepsi cans etc ) and give them a free candy in return (or vouchers ), I ll use his expertise and research in order to develop my corn vending machine

Marketing

  • Fab cafes

My first target is to start marketing my machine at fab cafe’s, I will focus on the point that my machine is fully made at a Fab lab. I ll provide the machine free of charge for any lab in return for a percentage of sales (not to exceed 10 %). On the other hand, the machine will be open source at git hub for fab lab users to create their own.

  • Cinemas It would take a lot of marketing in order to change the conventional way of selling pop-corn at cinemas. I ll begin by offering it as a way to reduce queue and increase the sales of pop-corn. I ll offer a more customizable machines for cinemas where pop-corn will be poped in large quantities, unlike the the normal machine where the amount of corn that will be poped depend on the user. The competitive edge for the corn vending machine would be the speed of it providing pop corn for customers and the price of corn box would be cheaper to attract more customers to try it out.

  • Public places

Having it at a public place or park may be kind of dangerous as most of our Pepsi vending machine are destroyed lol. however having it at a more controlled place such as network gaming places or PS4 gaming centers. Having a fab machine over there will be an awesome idea. In Jordan young men and teenager do spend most of their time there. I will sell it to such places.

Licensing

Open source licensing, there are two type of licensing permissive license (such as BSD, MIT and APACHE) which focus on getting open source used everywhere and place very few restrictions on what what the customer can do , the other type of licensing is protective licensing(such as GPL, AGPL) which has more clauses to protect user freedom. All open source licenses are reviewed by the open source initiative, also there is a website that could help you choose which license you can use link. licensing is required when you publicly distribute your work. which is a distribution license agreement.

BSD license

  • The only restriction is the inclusion of a license and copyright notice
  • Your own work remains unaffected
  • must provide your source code
  • gives user the ability to mix with your own work
  • its heavily used by web developer
  • you can take the BSD source code and update it and lock it down or use another license on your source code such as GPL

APACHE license

  • it includes additional language around patents with clear pathways for both open and closed code development

  • There is no obligation to make a contribution and you are free to take their Derivative work and license it under a different license

GPL license

  • Most popular open source license
  • Any modification done to the original application must be provided to those running the application
  • GPL is a viral license so any modification under your code must use GPL license as well

Examples:

If you use a software under the GPL licensing you wont have to share the code if you are running it on your server, however if you are using a software with an AGPL licensing they must make their changes public and share it. Usually if you are writing php back end you will use AGPL. BSD allow you take a software and release under another license, but this feature in GPL is not available. So for example you can take a code under a BSD license and lock it down

MIT license

  • The only requirement is to keep the copyright notice intact when redistributed
  • The license in not viral so you can update the source code and license it under another license
  • Ensure the author not to be held liable for any claim or damage

I will be using MIT licensing for my website and git repository. As to be honest I do like the permissive licensing prospective to ensure the user freedom in dealing with the license.
