Week 18
Applications and Implications
Assignment
Propose a final project masterpiece that integrates the range of units covered,
answering:
What will it do?
- It will be a clay extruder for a Delta 3D printer.
- It will give the clay a better and more steady flow.
Who's done what beforehand?
- Many has done it before, one of the big companies are Wasp.
- I have also looked a lot on Jonathan Keeper. He has made an open sourse 3D clay printer.
What will you design?
- I will design the extruder that would push out the clay to give it a better flow.
- I have designed a 3D printable extruder with a snail inside to give the clay a more steady and contollable flow. I am adding a stepper motor to the snail to make it turn.
What materials and components will be used?
The "Motor clay board" has this BOM:
3D printed parts, PLA:
Part 1 - Snail
Part 2 - Snail tube
Part 3A - TipA
Part 3B - TipB
Laser cut parts:
2 Gears
1 Gears holder
1 Extruder holder
Electronic parts:
1 Custom made - "Motor clay board" for Nema17
1 Custom made - Motor board for unipolar stepper
1 Module motor driver - A4988 Pololu
1 Module motor driver - L293D H bridge
1 Nema17 motor SY42STH47 - 1684A. 1.8 step angle. Bipolar stepper motor. High torque Hybrid stepper motor.
1 Jameco Sinotech - 2138812. Unipolar stepper motor
1 Power supply 12V
1 9V battery
Material:
10 kg clay - White clay KMB 123 without chamotte
1 Syringe 50ML - Bauhaus
1 Plastic tube ca. 4m - Bauhaus
Extra:
10 Screws
1 Connector for the plastic tube
Where will come from?
How much will they cost?
What parts and systems will be made?
- I am 3D printing some of the parts on an Ultimaker 2 and Ultimaker 2+.
- I will also be using the laser to cut out gears for pushing the clay out of the syringe.
- I will be designing all the boards for the electronics in Eagle.
- I am milling the boards on a Roland CNC machine.
What processes will be used?
What questions need to be answered?
How will it be evaluated?
- Is the flow of clay good enough?
- Is there too many air bubbles in the clay?
- Is there coming enough clay out?
Your project should incorporate 2D and 3D design,
additive and subtractive fabrication processes,
electronics design and production,
microcontroller interfacing and programming,
system integration and packaging
Where possible, you should make rather than buy
the parts of your project
Projects can be separate or joint, but need to show individual
mastery of the skills, and be independently operable
