*assignment

group assignment:

- test the design rules for your 3D printer(s)

individual assignment:

- design and 3D print an object (small, few cm)
that could not be made subtractively
- 3D scan an object (and optionally print it)

1.Designing and 3D printing an object.

The assignment is that I should make the small, few cm object that could not be made subtractively, which means being made additively.
I was thinking about which kind of object is good for me and useful.
And I found I need a small pencilcase.
I wanted to make something special which only 3d printer can make!! such as using joint or other skills.

Cura and Creatable D3

curad3
In Fablab Seoul, we have Creatable d3 as 3d printer.
Using this, I should download
Cura(sofrware) and use that.

Designing

swingswingswing
I used joint skill to make this pencilcase.
And futhermore I can move it by swinging.
I was impressed by Viking in amusement park.

3d printing

settingspeed
Setting and Speed

Size of nozel is 0.4, which leads height of layer 0.3 max!!
Thickness of shell should be in multiples of 0.4 as well!!

swingswingsetting
Using Cura to 3d print.

I opened my stl file on Cura.
And the left picture opened.
I rotated it and put like middle picture.
And I used 'Brim' to stick during printing.

Result

resultresult
When I got first time, it had some unnecessary parts because of 'Brim'.
So I had to take them out to get clear one.

resultresult result
I can get it move.
But it was not perfect clear.
Because I think I used just 'brim' not using 'support type'.
Some parts cannot be made clearly.
So I will try with 'support type' next time.

2.Scanning and 3d printing

Scanning

Principles of 3d Scan

principle

This video explains the principles of 3D scan well.
To sum up, it measures the laser distance which being reflected by the object.

scanner

We used 'xyz printing company's 3d scanner'(They don't have exact model name).
And used xyz scan handy as software.

scanner

Jinhyuk and I worked together.
Because it's really difficult to do it alone.

scan

Fail:Lost tracking

At the first trial, we failed.
During scanning, we missed it.
The screen showed 'lost tracking'.
It's because of 'distance'(Note skyblue ellipse in the above picture.)

How to solve

Usually 'around 30cm' is good distance to scan.
Less than is too close, futher than is too far.

scan
And tried agian with caring the distance, We finally got the right one.

Also I found one interesting thing!!
On my actual face, I have some beards.(You can check it on the picture on which scanning each other.)
But on the scanned picture, there is no beard.
I think the scanner can't recognize it because it's not so long and much yet.
Next time, I'll try it agian(with long and much beard) hh.

3d printing

scanscan

Using Cura, I loaded the file.
And it is too big to 3d print.
So I had to modify it, using 'scale' function.

scan
Putting 45 in Size Y(mm), Size X and Z automatically matched.
It showed it would take 1 hour 33 minutes to print.
So I thought it would be okay.

Result

result
I got this one.
It's quite clear and good.

Group assignments

Comparing the difference for angles

groupgroup
I tried to compare the difference for angles.
So I made 3 triangles containing 20,30,40,45,60,90,120.
I compared to them.
But the size is quite small so the quality is not that different.
Usually I will use small parts with 3d printing so the angle doesn't matter.
groupgroupgroup
20,30,40 in order.
It's not quite clear.
groupgroupgroup
45,60,90,120 in order.
It's not that different.
But if I should compare the result, I would say that.
With the wider angle you 3d print, the more clear result you will get.
