Final project
3week
*assignment
-group assignment:
characterize your lasercutter, making test part(s)
that vary cutting settings and dimensions
-individual assignment:
cut something on the vinylcutter
design, lasercut, and document a parametric press-fit construction kit,
accounting for the lasercutter kerf,
which can be assembled in multiple ways
1.vinil cutter
*making files
When making files for vinil cutter, I used Inkscape.
1.Import image that I want to make file for vinil cutter.
2.'Trace bitmap' to that image.
3.Modify by myself using 'characterstic draw'.(Actually I tried begi-line first time, but I think characterstic draw is better.)
4.Save as 'png' file.
*Using silhouette cameo3
In fablab Seoul, we have Silhouette cameo3 for vinil cutting.
So I used it.
To use cameo3, we should use
Silhouette studio
as software.
I opened my png file on Silhouette studio.
And then did follwing steps.
First,'trace bitmap'
In my case, my file was not drawing but picture. So I already traced bitmap on Inkscape but I did again.
Select trace area
Choose high bitmap or low bitmap
I tried both of them.
But My image worked only on high bitmap order. It didn't work on low bitmap order.
I couldn't figure it out.
I just guess my image already got to be processed on low bitmap order.
But I'm not sure.
Anyway now I have that image.
Second, 'Cut setting'
Click silhouette -> Cut settings.
Choose the right material. And set blade type which you will use for cutting.
Plus, thickness and speed.
At my first trial, I set speed=5, power=5.
This made this cutting image.
So I should change the value.
I changed speed=3, thickness=7, also blade type.
I misunderstood my blade type. So I should change from ratchat to automatic.
And finally I got the right cutting image.
Refering to Rodrigo(2017 fabacademy student and present Fablab seoul instructor)'s website,
I taped my image sticker.
I had been going to place this image on my notebook before I ran into unexpectable error.
My labtop is black!!!
So I just put white square on some part of my labtop.
Above it, I placed that sticker!
2.laser cutter
test cut with 3mm wood
When making test model first time, I ran into some error.
After I sat some parameters bigger than before and got back, something wrong happend.
So I found the answer. The answer is to set 'lock'
After doing that, it didn't happen again.
What made the problem?
And now I know why it happened.
Because I didn't set all values with parameter.
I set only some parts and didn't some parts which led to the problem.
So make sure set parameters all parts!
Setting: power:80-85, speed:10
material: 3mm mdf
I made test-cut bar and small rectangle.
And I found the right value.(2.73mm or something like that.)
But I found something wrong.
I didn't use the setting bar which help to keep laser distance from material.
Setting bar!!!!!!!!!
I used this bar for keeping laser distance from material.
This is too big. So it didn't fit in
Now I found the right kerf! (2.7mm So it would be 0.3mm)
Press-fit toy
I didn't get how it works( I mean press-fit)
I found myself so bad at math and 3d dimension
So first I just followed Rodrigo's press-fit test cut.
And then I used it with my test-cut bar.
I was impressed by it.
It made me think of bus.
So I tried.
But I made a mistake.
I wanted to make a bigger toy.
So as I was gonna set bigger, I changed thickness!!!!(related to kerf and material mm!!)
I was totally stupid!! hh
Of course it didn't fit. Because it was too big to fit in material 3mm.
When I restarted, I redesign my press-fit toy by pen to avoid same problem.
This time I changed my parameter value.
And it worked.(I mean I failed when I tried with test cut bar, but now I succeeded.)
And then I got press-fit toy.
But it was too simple and too weak.
So with same parts, I tried again.
With more same parts, I made this kind of small house.
But it's already not enough for perfect.
Because roof is not connected
Next time I'll try!!
