Week18 : Applications and Implications

What will it do?


The total weight of plastic garbage discarded in the sea is expected to exceed the total weight of fish inhabiting the sea by 2050. Aactually, our lab is located in a near beach aera, there are many plastic garbage on the beach. For keep beach clean, volunteers regularly pick up garbage on the beach. I would like to address this problem in Fab Academy.
I will make the machine that transforme the plastic bottle (garbage) on the beach to something that having a function or value. The purpose of making this machine is not to change the shape of the plastic, but to have more people touch this issue. So, the automated machine does not suit the purpose. Automation will make people less conscious that they are owners of the problem. In other words, I would like to make a machine that leaves room to do a little more manual, not an automated machine like a 3D printer.

【First goal】
First goal is making PET extruder. That can be used like a 3D pen.

【Second goal -- if I can】
Second goal is making Z axis module. That can be moved with controler like a claw crane.

【Third goal -- after fab academy】
Third goal is making XY axis module. That can be moved with controler like a claw crane too.

【Manual + Automatic】
The reason for modularization is also supposed to be combined with an automated machine.

Who's done what beforehand?

Precious plastic is source of my idea. Preciouse plastic fight plastic pollution and they have released a design drawing of Shredder machine, Extrusion machine, Injection machine on the website. So, those machines are open source. But it is difficult to make it for the people except the people who can use lathe.
I thought about developing a machine to reproduce plastic that can be made by digital fabrication.

There are also some people who have made an extruder for the former fab academy students.
But regarding the plastic extruder, I could not find a movie that plastic extruder is worked.

What will you design?

I will design future life and people's mind. The mission of the machine I will make is to change people's mind and change the future earth.
The purpose of making this machine is not to change the shape of the plastic, but to have more people touch this issue.

What materials and components will be used?
Where will come from?
How much will they cost?

What parts and systems will be made?

I will make Temperature control unit, LCD unit, stepper motor unit, supply(voltage div)unit.

What processes will be used?

I will use 3Dprinter CNC milling machin, laser cutter.

What questions need to be answered?

How to control temperature. What is the temperature at which PET melts?

What is the schedule?

I have already finished electric board of the all unit. I will try the condition where plastic melts steadily until June second and will make body until June 9th.

How will it be evaluated?

My final project is to evaluate it as complete if PET can melt and come out of the extruder.
