Week3 : Computer-Aided Design
Software trial
raster
MyPaint
Mypaint is a opensource & raster 2Ddesign software. This type of 2D software would be a very powerful software for the people who can paint well. but I feel this is not so "aided" software for the person who can't paint well like me... (Even if I can not draw a good picture, I understood this software is excellent.)

PhotoShop
Photoshop is commercial & raster 2Ddesign software, and it has a function to export files for web. This function makes it easy to resize images. It is very useful function. I resized the same photo to the same size and saved it in several file formats.(original file size is 1.6MB)
Resized the original size to 30% size.
■【result】
Resized the original size to 30% size.
■【result】
- 61KB----jpeg -low quality
- 102KB---jpeg -middle quality
- 193KB---jpeg -high quality
- 383KB---png8
- 1.4MB---png24
vector
Illustrator
Illustrator is commercial & vector 2Ddesign software. I draw a part. It's easy to draw!

Inkscape
Inkscape is free & vector 2Ddesign software. I drawed the same parts as above with Inkscape. It was very good for free software.

Svg file could be opened with text editor. Maybe, following part is discription of vector information.

3D design
freeCAD
freeCAD is open source 3DCAD.This software seemed to have many functions, but the operation was not intuitive for me.
■data is here
Onshape
Onshape is a cloud & browser & free type 3DCAD.The interface was easier to use than freeCAD.

Flood
Flood is a cloud & browser & parametric & algorithmic & free 3DCAD. It is very fun ! And I thought that if I handle this software well, artistic shaped objects will be created.

Fusion360
Fusion360 is a cloud type 3DCAD. It is free for people who meet the following conditions
- Student or educational institution
- Start-ups or enthusiasts (if non-profit organization or business sales are less than $ 100,000)

Observations : Opensource VS Commercial
Trying out various design software, I felt the difference between commercial and open source in 3D design software. (offcourse commercial one is easier to use.)
Although the source of Fusion 360 is not disclosed, many people can use it free of charge. I could not find the advantages of using other open source or free software.
But, I don't understand the ideological meaning of open source. So, perhaps I should not talk about the meaning of the open source from the aspect of the usability.

Modeling a possible final project
I decided to use Fusion360 for 3Dmodeling, Photoshop for resize the imagefiles.
Before designing, I rethinked the design concept.(rethinked design concept is here) Based on the design concept, I designed with Fusion360.

Assembly Function
Assembly function makes us to model by parts.
If we model by parts like follows, each parts can be assembled after.
The picture below shows the above parts assembled. The follow two models are the difference between whether the parts on the top are motor or handle. All other parts are the same. If we model by parts, it is easy to change.

Modeling
Parts Lvel
First, I modelled needed 20 parts.(Maybe, it needs more, but I can't imagne any more in this stage...)
Module Lvel
I assembled each parts
Combined Level
Extra
I did't use 2Ddesign software for above modeling for final project, so I tried another 2D design with Illustrator.
Drawing & Scan
I'm not good at drawing with pen... So, my friend draw cute giraffe for me. Following picture is scanned data.
Import
Above file was imported into Illustrator.
Trace
We can convert the raster data to vector data with trace function. Following picture is traced status.
UnGroup
Next step is ungroup.
