WEEK 16

Application and Implications

Assignment:

  1. WHAT WILL IT DO?

  2. My final project is an automatically heated vest. I imagine the vest working by reading the wearer’s (inside) temperature and outside temperature, comparing both temps and adjusting the inside temperature based on the optimal temperature set by the user. The heating mechanism will be 2 heating pads placed in the back of the vest.

  3. WHO HAS DONE WHAT BEFOREHAND?

  4. There are few brands who have embarked on this journey. Below is a list of brands that I found the most intriguing:

  5. WHAT MATERIALS AND COMPONENTS WILL BE REQUIRED?

  6. • Conductive Thread
    • N-Channel Mosfet
    • Thermochromatic Pigment
    • Heating Pads
    • Fabric ( At this moment im not sure what type of fabric I am using)
    • LilyPad Coin Cell Battery
    • 3D printing

  7. WHERE WILL THEY COME FROM?

  8. Majority of the components will come from the Dassault Lab inventory. There are also some components sourced from online or local stores.

  9. HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

  10. At this point the project cost ~$100. This is excluding the cost of the fabric. Depending the fabric choice the price can raise substantially.

  11. WHAT PARTS AND SYSTEMS WILL BE MADE?

  12. I plan on making almost every part and system myself. I will be designing and making the electronics in the lab. I also want to cut and sew the vest myself in the lab.

  13. WHAT PROCESS WILL BE USED?

  14. 2D and 3D CAD. 3D printing to make snap buckles. Sewing and possibly embroidery to make the garment and conductive thread. Precision CNN to make the electronics. Software development (C, Arduino-IDE, Python) for creating a user interface. Possibly networking via a bluetooth or WiFi connection.

  15. WHAT TASKS NEED TO BE COMPLETED?

  16. At this point the electronics are 90% complete. The last task in terms of electronics is to add the heating pads and test them. As for the rest of the project creating the actually garment is the next big task at hand.

  17. WHAT QUESTIONS NEED TO BE ANSWERED?

  18. What type of fabric?
How do I insulate the vest and at the same time make sure the vest is breathable?
How to correctly calculate wearers temperature and maintain it?
Where will the vest be worn? In what circumstances?
How to control the vest? Software Interface? Smartphone App?

  19. WHAT IS THE SCHEDULE?

  20. As of June 3 I am working to finish documenting my weekly assignments. I am hoping to get them done by the end of the week, June 8th. From June 8th I will be working on my final project. First I will complete the electronics layout and add the heating pads. After that all my focus on designing the garment. Once the garment is design I will work on the software interface for the garment.

  21. HOW WILL IT BE EVALUATED?

  22. I plan to do something fun to test my project. Since the only way to test the vest is putting myself in cold and uncomfortable situations, I plan on to possible test out the vest by walking into a meat locker and doing some night camping where the temp drops significantly. I also can plan to add thermochromic paint to the back panel of the vest for visual feedback when the vest heats up
