Week 18

Applications and Implications

The assignment for this week is to propose a final project that integrates the range of units covered, answering the following questions:

> What will it do ?

> Who's done what beforehand ?

> What materials and components will be required ?

> Where will they come from ?

> How much will it cost ?

> What parts and systems will be made ?

> What processes will be used ?

> What tasks need to be completed ?

> What questions need to be answered ?

> What is the schedule ?

> How will it be evaluated ?

Note:
Where possible, we should make rather than buy the parts of our project.

Projects can be separate or joint, but need to show individual mastery of the skills, and be independently operable.

My final Project and what will it do

For my final project I decided to make a Proper Home automation solution (Wi-Ro) for LAZY people like me with a remote ....... and the catch in the project is that ..... the remote is Wi-Fi enabled..... I am planning to hack into a remote control and interface it with ESP or Node MCU.

The reason why I started to work on this project ..... I feel like people are lazy to go from one room to another just to switch on/off lights. My Personal experience, Every night when I go to bed and I see any of the light which was left ON, them I'm like Nooooooooooooo...... this can't be happening, I don't want to get up.

I need some super powers to do that work for me ....... and ...... I'll make it myself ....

Apart from basic appliance control with my system I will also try to make it a bit fancy tech piece...... I am planning to add one small OLED Display which would be displaying Date and Time along with the approx temperature of the room...

Who's done what beforehand ?

In Fabacademy till know I haven't come across anyone who is doing the same thing ...... but I know home automations are very common.... but still i wish to move ahead as its having a USP, remote can be connected via Wifi. While searching for products which are similar to the project I found few things on amazon which resemble it ... but again at some point they use IR transmission reception...... which I dont like ... I dont like pointing remote's....

What materials and components will be required ?

Here I am sharing sketches of my project

List of Materials (BOM) and How much will it cost ?

 > Node MCU --> 400INR
 > ATMEGA 328P Microcontroller --> 100INR
 > Misc Electronic components ( crystals, capacitors, resistors, LED etc) --> 100INR
 > Copper Clad Boards --> 100INR
 > 6 Amp wall panel mount switches --> 40INR
 > Backelite sheet --> 25INR
 > A normal remote control --> 50INR
 > OLED Screen --> 300INR
 > LM 35 Temp sensor --> 35INR
 > RTC Module --> 200INR
 > Screw Terminals --> 100INR
 > 5V Relays --> 200INR
 > Darlington transistors --> 20INR
 > Power supply 230vac/5V --> 280INR
 Total is about 2100 INR which is =~ 32 USD

Where will they come from ?

AKGEC Fablab has assured me to provide the material....... I can use the things which are available in the lab...... "The things which are not in the lab would be procured by the lab", Said by our Local Instructor.

Also you can buy these things online on ebay or Amazon.

What parts and systems will be made ?

The parts and systems I would be making would be :

1. PCB for mounting everything.

2. Back cover for covering all the electronic circuit boards in the panel.

3. Preparing Backelite sheet ( Laser cut ) for mouting the switches.

4. Programming the whole setup.

Apart from these here are the things which would be directly used over the main PCB :

1. Node MCU

2. RTC Module

3. Relays

4. OLED Display

5. Switches

What processes will be used ?

Many of the lessons from the class are going to be used for completion of this project, which includes :

1. Making 3D model of the back panel ( CAD Designing )

2. Printing 3D back panel ( 3D Printing )

3. Laser cutting of bakelite sheet ( Computer controlled cutting )

4. PCB Designing ( Electronics Design )

5. PCB Milling on SRM 20 and Soldering ( Electronics production )

6. Writing program for the setup ( Embedded Programming )

7. Interfacing sensor and displaying on OLED / controlling applicances ( Input Output Devices )

8. Making a mesh network with all the panels ( Networking )

9. Complete the project within time frame ( Project Management )

What questions need to be answered ?

1. For me the major concern is to hack into a remote and transmit its data over the network.

2. Realizing a Mesh Network.

3. Designing PCB which can stuff all the things in small form factor.

4. Testing the setup in real situation.

5. Data Parsing over the network.

6. Working with Node MCU

What is the schedule ?

How will it be evaluated ?

My Project can be evaluated on the basis of the methods I have used to complete the project...... Along with that the overall performance of the project can be evaluated..... Well, this project is just a proof of concept which may need a lot of optimization.....

Let's go invent tomorrow

Rather than worrying about what happened yesterday
